Take the challenge for #PlasticFreeJuly

This month, we’re challenging ourselves and our community to choose to refuse single-use plastic. From bottles to bags, every swap makes a difference.

Will you take the challenge with us?

Gorse is often burned in the belief this controls its spread.

But this 23-year-long study shows that, in fact, burning “triggers mass seed regeneration & rapid regrowth, locking the landscape in a cycle of thick gorse cover.”

Left alone, gorse breaks up naturally.

I took this video of the mighty Carrownagappul Bog SAC in east Galway last week. Note the dams in the drains. Excellent work.

I was privileged enough to give a keynote speech to the Mary Robinson Climate and Nature Conference earlier on the theme of courage in crisis.

The speech that emerged from my brain was a nerve wrackingly honest and personal look at where I find my courage.

The rich are trying to steal everything, our creativity, our jobs, our livable climate, our land. But those of us who are privileged to spend our lives in touch with Nature know this: we are the truly wealthy ones. We must defeat the greedy and build an Earth-centered society. Are you in?

Absolutely amazing to hear Cuckoo back in Lullymore! They're all but gone from farmland where l live and sadly can only find refuge in bogs.

The Sand Martin are wasting no time this year. With the sunshine lots have paired up & are building nests. The contrast between this yr & last couldn't be greater. Sand Martin are hugely weather dependant. Cool & wet conditions make for low productivity. Let's hope this year is kind to them.

Today at #BOU2025 I'm exploring how aquatic habitats might help to buffer declining insectivore populations, using the Spotted Flycatcher as an example.
