“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

MLK Jr.

Loving does not mean ignoring abuse, bigotry and violence, but if hate grows within us, we are defeated.

Love is the difficult way through these brutal times.

Good night.

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

If by chance you need another reason to hate "AI" techbros.

This guy who dropped out of Humber to work in his dad's biz .... says nearly the same thing he did a few months ago about housing. Let them eat cake, from a guy who now lives in his mom's house.

While I agree that a collapse of the AI economy is likely, I doubt the other outcome feared here will come to pass.

Didn't make it to the Orchid show but I did make it through the weekend. And it was decent, more than decent. So there's that.

One of my housemates was trying to put away glasses from dinner last night. I'm not sure what happened but he dropped the tray, which meant broken glass everywhere. He's 79, and not much one for housework, so I cleaned up. This means I may not make it to the Orchid Show today, but maybe you can...

There are still tickets available, or you can make a donation.

We are entertaining tonight, and I had to unexpectedly find myself back at the supermarket: No Frills, where I hate to shop for several reasons, including the lineup, because they understaff.

I was stewing a bit, and then I looked around. Three of the men ahead of me were all absolutely gorgeous! ☺️

Watching men proudly carrying their Valentine's bouquets in freezing weather with no wrapping was painful for me as someone who worked on and off as a florist for more than 25 years.

Most cut flowers, if fresh and handled and cared for properly, can last well over a week. They just killed theirs.

In any other administration the married DHS chief having an affair with her married aide would be an enormous scandal. And with Trump’s Christian nationalist base you’d there’c be outrage (yet they’re frauds). But here, it’s just buried in the story.

ROFL

I was a little early this year.

I was sad to end things after 30+ years of distant but mutually admiring friendship, a year of courtship, and several weeks of budding romance, but as Maya Angelou said, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Friday the 13th before Valentine’s Day is the traditional day to serve a loved one with divorce papers. Congratulations to all who celebrate.

Labour front benchers scratch their heads and wonder why their base has collapsed, why so many people are disillusioned, frustrated, furious. I mean, what is it about pissing on every value and principle your party once upheld that alienates the electorate? Beats me. 🤔

I gave up most of my concern about privacy long ago. Not suggesting others should do that, but in this new reality I choose to focus my attention on things like monitoring for and preventing identity theft.

Nevertheless, this is surveillance and Big Data at a level that makes even my skin crawl.

The current trajectory of deploying LLM tech absolutely constitutes a direct assault on human labor. I understand that and I'm not ignoring it. I will say that I think focusing on the tech as a way to push back is not a winning strategy. The tech is not doing this. Humans are.
This is a route to destroy unions of public school workers, increase class sizes, make small classes a luxery, and ultimately mandate teachers use Ai "efficiently" enough to justify the additional labor.
