Oh good, we’re charging MAGAts for crimes again! Can we maybe do the murderers next?

Also, apple cider vinegar? Did he think she had a wine stain on her sweater? What a weird thing to squirt on someone. And of all the reps to have a wine stain on their clothes, I’d imagine Omar is low on the list.

Surprise surprise, one of the only car-centric businesses on Butler St is also the only one being a dick about snow shoveling. Seriously GetGo, you let Wendy’s beat you on that front. Get it together.

Tomorrow I’ll probably talk about sneckdowns and all the ways a few inches of snow can show the inefficiencies in your transportation network.

But today I’m gonna throw snow at the wall under my kid’s window and see how close we can get.

So why do Dutch drivers speed? Mostly to either keep up with traffic or because they’re in a hurry, whereas those who respect limits are for safety, because it’s a rule, or because of fines. I wonder what a survey in the US would show, especially since the fear of fines isn’t as strong.

This data would suggest that approximately 50% of Dutch drivers speed depending on different conditions, and that they do so slightly more frequently than other Europeans. What does the data say about how frequently American drivers speed? I would hypothesize that it’s higher.

So what's wrong with high speeds? Well, primarily, that they increase the severity of crashes. But also, because they reduce reaction time and observation of peripheral vision, they actually increase the absolute number of crashes as well.

So why don't we just put a speed limiter on repeat speeder's cars? Well, because it works while the speed limiter system is turned on, but when it's deactivated (which on some systems can be done if the user engages "panic" mode), speeders go right back to speeding. Infrastructure is more effective.

Why do people want speed cameras? It's just for governments to make money, right? Well, I don't know, I don't work in government anymore, but I still want them because they reduce crashes by 20%.

Ive been reading through SWOV's research (hence me not posting as much news commentary) and figured I should mention some of it. For instance, I've been going through their fact sheet on speed and speed management which has a ton of good stuff, and on this page mentions minimum speeds. 1/2

I watched Not Just Bike's recent video about the new LRT in Toronto and was confused by the signaling there as well. Is this a new thing? Or do I just not understand signaling?
Here are two photos of the PRTX lights in Pittsburgh, one in a green light state and the other in a red light state.

I'm wondering if using the white LRT style lights would have been a little better, so car drivers won't get confused

This one is a wild ride. As far as I can tell, no one was injured, so, that's a positive. But in relation to the earlier story about a driver being charged, it's interesting how fast charges can be brought in this case.

Too many crashes result in no charges for the negligent party. It's good to see these charges come forward. My question is, why does it take so long to press the charges?

I have a news alert set up for DOMI (Department of Mobility and Infrastructure for the non-nerds), but it tends to only return me sports stories. I guess sports writers like to use words like "DOMInate."

Okay, why are all the actual crashes, where someone's negligence hurts another road user, called "accidents," but this one, where a driver hurt no one but themselves (and their passengers) called a crash? You've got this backwards, @wtae4.bsky.social.

Glad to see the follow-up on this @wtae4.bsky.social story, because when it was initially published it was half-baked. It seems as if the driver failed to drive safely given the conditions. That said, it's important to ask what infrastructure could do to encourage safer driver behavior.

Again, @wtae4.bsky.social doing nothing more than passing along a dispatch report. Which "officials" responded? Did you follow up with them? What does "struck by a vehicle along the road" mean? Did the driver jump the sidewalk? Is there insufficient ped infrastructure? What's the history here?
