We sometimes feel like crashes are happening everywhere, but they really aren’t: 76% of crashes are on 10% of our roads #PGHVisionZero

We tend to not have great data. EMS only get called when there’s an injury or fatality, while near misses aren’t reported #PGHVisionZero

Ms. Adriazola-Steil has been very complimentary of Pittsburgh, but apparently there is SOME room for improvement. #PGHVisionZero

Limit it to fatal and serious injury crashes, and we see: merge points, the most common crash area at an interchange; north of the interchange, where the speed limit changes and drivers start thinking about the 279 split; and Brandt School Rd, where you turn off of 910 to get to nearby services. 5/7

The article points out that there are a lot of crashes at the intersection, but most of them are property damage only, aka fender benders, and shouldn't be discussed in the same breath as crashes that kill or seriously injure people. 4/7

However, the proposed interchange at Wexford, rather than having an intersection directly above the highway, actually moves the intersection to one side, reducing the number of intersections and freeing up a ton of underutilized land on the east side of I-79 (assuming PennDOT will sell it). 3/7

When I looked up what a single point urban interchange was, I found images like this one at I-15 and University Parkway in Orem, UT. This interchange takes up a similar amount of space to the existing Wexford interchange, while making you feel like you're driving directly into oncoming traffic. 2/7
