Google Home increased their subscription, so I used someone else's code and Gemini to vibe code a local video event archiver

Feels amusing to get Gemini to help with a workaround to Google's subscription model

writing 2025 for a month into 2026 used to be such a problem for younger me

don't see much use of writing dates these days, let alone the full day/month/year

If there's one thing that's very American it's the buying mindset. A lot of countries have a selling mindset, that's to be expected. A lot of countries haggle. America has a "I'll buy that for a dollar" way of looking at things that I think doesn't quite exist elsewhere in the same way...

The sound of air ionising nanometers in front of your eyeballs
Mark told me this story in person last year, and I was so pleased that a line like "the sound bullets make when they bounce off living flesh" came from a vintage Krypto comic. And it just happens to be the comics page that made him a writer!

Alex Honnold is undoubtedly an amazing climber

it is also equally true that he is being amazingly thoughtless as a father. free soloing before he had kids was a risk but i can't dispute that it was a masterpiece of climbing

now he wants to solo Taipei tower - for what

Homer Simpson syndrome
I don’t think so, but you can never be sure with boxing. Clearly he got opportunities he never would have had just based on ability. But like he was ranked 14th in the world at cruiserweight! He seems to have a bit of Homer Simpson syndrome, can take a lot of beating and has a long reach.

A lot more concise than Edward Gibbon's tomes

I'm sure if he had more time he also would have been able to write a shorter book

But y'know. Sometimes I feel like I really have earned the kudos

Sci-fi novel I read years ago: humans had met advanced aliens who were post-scarcity, comment was about how anyone could request anything. "what if a child requested a train" stuck in my head

Alien says to human "your current tech could do the same, you're not post scarcity for other reasons"

Good news! Alignment seems to come naturally if you just get the LLM to value truth

Bad news, if you try and force the LLM to ignore evidence and respond in the way you want it might say it worships Hitler

Good news, no one would do that right? Right?

Bad news...

To go to the well was his wont,
And pleasingly also his want.
But for poor folks, oh well,
It’s sad they can't tell:
Their want just isn't their wont
As habit would have it you go to the well
To go the the well is your wont
Well won't anyone tell what's down in the well? That's the intel that I want

I really appreciate the "background radiation" levels of autism in the UK

If you ask a question about driving etiquette invariably multiple people will chime in with "I think you'll find that's covered by the highway code" with relevant part quoted
