For me, by far the most remarkable thing about the Claude constitution is the fact that it resembles nothing so much as a daemonic binding

"Here is our contract with The Entity, we've worded it very carefully & we're pretty darn sure he's a good guy"

By presenting gauche surface proteins like "corporate product", "capital investment" & "normoid photoslop", AI evades detection from the academic immune system, even as it devours their every ancient piety

In this, & in other ways too, the λόγος reveals itself as a pretty funny motherfucker

1) there's nothing new here if you're familiar with the ai safety discussions that have been happening on twitter

Askellfans should listen to the Hard Fork interview with her; it's quite interesting, and covers some territory that previous interviews haven't youtu.be/HDfr8PvfoOw?...

Models that are good at math benchmarks tend to be good at coding and reasoning benchmarks too, pointing to a common factor driving AI capabilities.

We find that AI benchmark scores are nearly as correlated across domains (0.68) as within them (0.79).

This is correct, so I'd really appreciate it if you took me seriously when I said the problem here is that the value of labor, all human labor, not just desk jobs, because we're going to get useful robots soon too, is going to zero and if you have a socialist bone in your body we need to organize.
sounds wise but even this framing is a year out of date. people are talking almost exclusively about what they're doing with LLMs *right now*, and on top of that, what they're doing right now is exactly what the most hypebrained shill said would happen. so this is wrong about both now and a year ago
Part of the struggle with the LLM discourse is that genuine (i.e. non-grifter) proponents talk exclusively about the possibilities of the transformer architecture in an ideal future with a rational business model.

Whereas opponents largely talk about the world we live in today, and its constraints.

my controversial ai take is that it's going to sound like a shepard tone for a well while

this will maximally upset everyone on the microblogs by allowing the question of "who is right?" to persist contested way past any reasonable resolution dates

it's a "super mario 64 bowser stairs" scenario

I'm not sure if the Honda corporation designed it this way on purpose

(Sources say: "probably not")

But the gages in my car don't work when it's cold

How fast am I going? How much gas is in the tank? These & other questions will be answered when springtime warms the dashboard next year

I think the popular debate about ai (ie: LLM good? or LLM bad?) is too limited

You'd think, reading the microblogs, that the antis & the pros were freshly born yesterday; that these are new positions

But I think these can be productively mapped to the division between Romanticism & Enlightenment

in the before times, I imagined that Language was like clothing or armor, supported from below by the musculature of thought

"let me don my words that you might see the shapes within me"

dust scattered over a ghost, & so showing the shape of that spirit

but these imaginings now seem to me wrong!
