“Pairing free buses with paid parking says we value people in motion more than cars at rest,” writes Nicolas Rohatyn.
Opinion | The Way to Pay for Free Buses Is to End Free Parking
Free buses would be transformative not only for riders, but for the ecosystem of the city as a whole.

The Ringer clearly rates Carlos Alcaraz the football player over Carlos Alcaraz the tennis player. Either there’s been a mistake or that shot that hit the woodwork a couple of weeks back was really memorable

I found out Goodreads was double counting some books due to the way it interacted with my Kindle, so after correcting that I am now down to 292 books read this year. Going to try to hit 300 while I’m on vacation

I don’t know how much time and aggravation I’ve saved this year by having an AI that can respond to asks like “hey look at this PDF soccer schedule that my kid’s team emailed to me. Put all the games and trainings on my calendar and cc my wife”
Seems the disconnect here is some of the most talked about use cases are in situations where originality is prized (writing, images, academic research) and AI isn’t great at originality. Meanwhile it’s great in uses like managing emails, taking meeting notes etc but those aren’t talked about a lot

I was at the Singapore Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources as the Assistant Director for air pollution policy when Singapore decided to put in a smoking ban in bars. The amount of industry feedback on the death of the nightlife industry was enormous. Proved ultimately unfounded
this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

I only saw this fight through small video clips so it was all brief boxer shorts.
OK, that's enough.

I was randomly surfing and came across the @hankgreen.bsky.social video about delayed sleep phase disorder and… this is me to a T! If left to my own devices I would (and do) sleep at 2 and wake up at 10. Very illuminating

I finished C is for Corpse today, which (oddly enough) was the final book in my reading of Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone series. Earlier this year I finished all of Laura Lippman’s Tess Monaghan books. Now starting on Sara Paretsky’s VI Warshawski books. Any other female PI series that people like?

Couldn’t agree more. This is one of the worst things about ChatGPT. But the tone a deliberate choice, not a natural output of LLMs.

I find that AI has been really helpful for doing research but I deliberately chose Perplexity because it seems to take a “just the facts” tone to my queries.
i'm fascinated by how much people love and are amazed by chat gpt saying "nice catch!" and "great observation!" because i personally find the condescension and obsequiousness the most skin-crawling thing about how LLMs "talk"
If we are banning cell phones for kids we need to be talking about banning chatbots for boomers

So this guy gets the ball at an Eagles-Giants game at MetLife, 10 NJ state troopers & a security guard try to force him to give them the ball, and at the end of it all he still retains possession. Only goes to show the Giants defense really can’t force turnovers

Jalen Hurts gave diehard Eagles fan Paul Hamilton a touchdown ball in MetLife Stadium in December 2022. Then team, NFL, and security officials accosted the Eagles fan, according to a lawsuit.

I think the enterprise use cases for LLMs are really powerful and it’s kind of sad that what gets all the attention are things that AI is crap at and things that AI is unethically used for

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

If your particular political ideology leads you to argue that a cashier flinging racial epithets should not be fired or that someone who was caught driving drunk should not face accountability, I have to say your ideology doesn’t sound very compelling

I got called by the Gallup poll yesterday and among all the usual questions (right direction/wrong direction, economy etc) they also asked how many books I’ve read in the past year. I think my answer of 320 probably skewed the results

Who controls the British pound?
Who keeps the Met policemen down?
We do! We do!
Ooooh, this is an interesting bit of breaking London news! The Met police, as of today, will require all officers to declare if they're a member of the freemasons.

ironic because if you claim to be in the business of promoting bold, common-sense ideas that that ruffle a lot of feathers for traditionally liberal/democratic constituencies, "we should build high density housing in desirable areas" is pretty much spot on
