GM Tip: Players often want to make highly competent characters and don't think to put conflict into their backstories. But conflict is great for making good stories! Ask the players to come up with at least one messy part of their past that can be mined for ideas in the campaign.

GM Tip: Don’t protect your villains. Let them fail, flee, adapt, or die. A dynamic antagonist becomes far more memorable than an untouchable one.

Had a chargen session for the Traveller #ttrpg last night, now looking forward to the further adventures of Aristothenes Kyreikos VIII, a poorly educated Knight Errant and a former Merchant fleet officer, whose main competence are his rapier-duelling skills. 🤺 :-D

I've said it once and I'll say it again: People who think that character death is the only interesting consequence in TTRPGs are boring people.

"Oh I can't create tension if the game doesn't allow for me to kill a PC."

Really? You can't? Or are you just bad at GMing?

accordingly-- twitch and netflix are actually the biggest users of AWS in recent years. streaming takes a LOT of power and data to send videos over the internet. we shouldn't leave out huge streaming sites like twitch and netflix out of the discussion of data center power usage

The fact that people are allowed to store their cars in the street is really weird - after all, a car is an individual's own private property and their responsibility. I can't think of a single other item you can store in public in this way.

I can't get over just how small this is compared to the arguments surrounding it, many of them coming from non-vegans. Not trying for a gotcha, but skipping one meat-based meal supports the physical and social environment by orders of magnitude compared to skipping AI use. It's not even close.
I think the weakest argument is the environmental costs of AI. I do not believe AI is worse than any other datacenter usage.

My daily personal AI energy footprint is under 5WH. It's one of the most low-cost activities in my life.

My computer uses more than that just typing these responses.

How about we start with the fact that only a handful of the thousands of different roleplaying games that exist and are being played & enjoyed have a thing called "levels" in them...

WotC gets much of its player/costumer retention through sunk cost fallacy. Many Indie TTRPGs aren't that complex or weird, but getting into D&D 5e (either as a player or as a GM) is so taxing, daunting and expensive that a lot of players just assume learning other games is gonna be a chore, too. 🧵

I really don't think people understand how fascist and thought police-like they are being with their definitions of plagiarism, art, and IP law.

I don't want to live in the world the anti-AI people are describing. It's more conservative and has less art.
Most of what I make is unique on a design level, and as my strongest example, many are from photographs.

It contains original work, original and specific transformations, original context, original characters and designs.

The world where that is called plagiarism is a more conservative world, IMO.

On AI & water usage, it looks like all US data center usage (not just AI) ranges from 628M gallons a day (counting evaporation from dam reservoirs used for hydro-power) to 200-275M with power but not dam evaporation, to 50M for cooling alone.

So not nothing, but also a lot less than golf courses.

The obsession with AI for transformational use cases obscures the fact that there are a ton of small, but very positive and very meaningful, use cases across many fields.

In this case, AI note-taking significantly reduces burnout among doctors & increases their ability to focus on their patients.
