Author of THE CATAPHRACT OATH, a swashbuckling clockpunk mecha adventure!

Ask me about giant robot cartoons or obscure TTRPGs or kung fu movies or food history or sci fi/fantasy novels and I will talk your ear off.

He/Him

Arguably the best Marc.

I finally got my act together, so now my swashbuckling #clockpunk #mecha #fantasy, THE CATAPHRACT OATH, is available in paperback!

Wherein a disgraced alchemist and a sword-wielding countess must salvage an ancient war machine, while dealing with scheming nobles and playwrights of dubious talent.

My dog has gotten into the habit of laying on me while I'm sprawled out on the couch reading or playing Switch. Which, y'know, is the best thing, even if not particularly conducive to productivity.

it would sort of makes sense that Pepe Le Pew isn't actually from France but is just some pick-up artist guy from Toronto who's pretending to be French

The world is a farce (and not the funny kind), but pizza is not illegal.

Yet.

Dropped by the library today, first visit of the year!

My local library has a thing that tracks the MSRP of everything you check out, and spits out "You saved a total of $X this year!"

Which I can't help but look at as a way to KEEP SCORE.

Gonna try to beat last year's record.

"Oh hey, wasn't I doing another Chrono Trigger playthrough?" I asked myself.

So I fire up the SNES, and ... I realize I left off right before that one finnicky part where you have to put the code in JUST RIGHT to save Lucca's mom.

... I think I may play Mario instead.

If you have a few beers and squint, K-Pop Demon Hunters and Sinners take place in the same universe.

WELP.

So The Cataphract Oath didn't get one of the randomly chosen 300 spots for #SPFBO. Buuut, at least it got picked up (at least for the first round) for #SPSFC.

Let's hear it for writing multigenre mashups!

Starting off my "Watch movies I have on my shelf" resolution with a Blu Ray I nabbed fairly recently solely because it was a Chang Cheh movie.

(Also, obligatory Eddie Izzard ref: "Did you bring a flag?")

I went into 2026 with ... guarded optimism? Albeit with an inkling that the other shoe would drop, rendering me a cynic once more.

... I hadn't expected that shoe to drop this early.

So, uh. I'm procrastinating. Which means, instead of opening the word processor, I'm poking around old files and old drafts, I just found an unfinished manuscript that I started during quarantine.

... and it's 41k words long? That I forgot I wrote?

I may have to do something with this.

Okay, might as well get this started.

It's January 1, which means, as I'm sure you all know, that there's a whole new bunch of characters who have entered the public domain. This time around, it's characters created in 1930.

The following is a list of pulp & pulpy characters now in the p.d.

I think I've figured out my resolution for 2026. Namely, I'm gonna try to watch more physical media.

Probably won't cancel Netflix just yet, but I've got a fair number of DVDs and Blu-Rays on the shelf. Not to mention stuff available at the local library.

(Libraries are rad, BTW).

Hey #WriterSky! I'm in search of a calendar-app-thing to track the new year's writing. Honestly something formatted for 2026 in Excel would be just fine. Theoretically a way to keep my self accountable and/or keep score for the new year.

I had one on my previous laptop but I forgot where I got it.

O DANG NEW #BIGTOPBURGER!

It's honestly mostly denouement for the season, but it's still great.

So, a few months ago, I saw a cute resin mini at a convention that I knew a friend of mine would like. So I bought it. Painted it. Figured it'd be a good holiday gift.

And, earlier tonight, after fretting over its condition for literal months, THE SWORD BROKE AS I WAS HANDING IT TO HER.

Tragic.

Meanwhile, not only did I wind up working the whole day at my Real People Job, I also wound up staying late due to schenanigans entirely outside of my control.

Lucky thing I'm coming off a long break, otherwise I'd be far more frazzled than I currently am.

Today’s #MondayReads is The Cataphract Oath by Marc Edmond Best (@dapperdinobot.bsky.social).

Saw this at a pitch event on this site months ago, pitched as something like “Dumas X Gundam”. Steampunk mechs sounds like a good time to me.
