Taking hold of the fact that, for all the indictments of human stupidity and depravity, the story of Scripture is *always* that restoration is coming.

Hope is woven in and through it all. Hope that will not disappoint.

It’s a lot harder to walk back having coddled up to hate-spewing people than it is to avoid making such associations in the first place.

“You will hear everlastingly, in all discussions about newspapers, companies, aristocracies, or party politics, this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man…”

UPDATE: Reached out to the Rev. Hannah Kardon, a United Methodist minister who was there that day and has been active in religious demonstrations at Broadview.

“They are making it clear that they are scared of prayer … it speaks the truth that what they are doing in that building is evil.”

We grew up poor. I don't know how we would've managed without government assistance.

My parents both worked hard but struggled to make ends meet without help.

Please see the shared humanity & imago Dei in people needing assistance.

Don't let your hearts be hardened toward your neighbors.💛

In a way, I find the authoritarian takeover of our media system even more disturbing than the authoritarian takeover of our political system.

Our political system has been failing basically my entire adult life. But, the media system provided accountability and sort of worked. Now it’s collapsing.

Is there a section of Bluesky where clergy hang out?

Another week trying to counsel and encourage others through things like suicidal ideation, chronic illness, and poverty.

I remember on Twitter there used to be a lot of community among clergy.

Started my classes today by asking students to take out a sheet of paper and anonymously complete the following: "One of the greatest difficulties I have with reading is ____________ because ___________." Grateful for their honest responses. Genuinely saddened by many of them.

George was just trying to get to work.

ICE pepper-sprayed him, dragged him from his car, locked him in a detention center, and placed him on suicide watch. He even missed his young daughter’s birthday in the process.

This man is a veteran and American citizen. Don't look away.
"They put me on suicide watch and they put me in the cell, I'm naked, in like a hospital dress and just a concrete bed with like a mattress, like a thin mattress and, they leave the light on 24/7."

Keep our focus on you, Lord,
that we may place our trust
in your faithful love,
rather than in things that are
passing and temporal,
however solid and secure
they may seem to us.
Guide us to those things
which help us to encounter,
reveal, and embrace
your kingdom.

Christian nonviolence is not a strategy to rid the world of violence, but rather the way Christians must live in a world of violence... faithful followers of Christ in a world of war cannot imagine being anything else than nonviolent.

Things to consider:

Document the violence & violations--on camera, w/photos, saving images--any way you can. Speaking as a historian- it will matter

Point out violations--w/images & text--even if you think it won't matter. It will. It needs to be called out & exposed

You are a witness.
Expose it.

Christian nationalism bases many of its theological and ethical ideals on the Torah, not the Gospels. But even there they get it wrong. The Torah points toward a society in which the poor are cared for and immigrants are treated as neighbours.

It’s the duty of all theologically trained clergy to expose error and denounce heresy.

Christian Nationalism is syncretism. It is error. When it is embraced willfully, it becomes heresy.

Clergy, let’s do our job. This is on us.
