Hello, new followers! Nice to have you. I am a NTT prof working on early modern and canon critical philosophy. I post on academia, unions/labor, parenting, music, & more. I currently work on Blaise Pascal and his philosopher sister Jacqueline Pascal. If you’re interested, I made a little thread.
I apparently am on a list called “Techno-pessimists,” which seems like a list for tech-bros to avoid posters who don’t like bitcoin and AI. #blessed

It’s wild that democrats think ICE will follow laws to wear body cams when they won’t even follow the constitution.
Pouring more money into DHS while it operates with impunity and a blatant disregard for human life is unconscionable.

You don’t fix abuse by funding it. You stop it by cutting off its funding and dismantling the institution that’s terrorizing communities.

House approves spending bills despite many Democrats' objections to ICE funds
The House has approved the final set of spending bills to avoid a government shutdown, despite objections from Democrats to the funding levels set for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

guys minneapolis is a living hell today. they've tear-gassed so many people, tear-gassed a park, beaten people up in front of me. greg bovino is rolling around to gas stations and posing in front of them, trying to cause a riot.

More of this please. And lots of dropping the f-bomb. That’s what fighting and resistance looks like!
NEW: Democrats are pumping out content of themselves, pumping iron:

Heck, to start I’ll settle with dem leadership going on-record saying, “ICE is terrorizing people instead of doing its supposed job and should be abolished.”
dem leadership should join the protests - put their bodies on the line

Despite US politics being a total clusterfuck, this is an incredible development. It will be the first time anyone under the age 54 will have been alive to see a Lunar mission. Part of the spacecraft was also built by the European Space Agency. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

He will proclaim certain opinions: he will shelter behind a label…One day monarchist, the next day, anarchist…antisemitic...In lynchings, pogroms, all great bloody movements…movements where there is no risk, those who do the actual dirty work are recruited from among the sub-men. -Simone de Beauvoir
What I’ve learned about American politics the last decade is there is an annoyingly sizable population that does not actually believe in anything and simply imprints on the latest thing they heard on the radio like a duckling

Blackwell Companion to Pascal is out! It’s an impressive volume and I’m excited to be part.

My first chapter, “Pascal, Life and Works” available in the free preview.

My other contribution is ”Pascal, Inc.: Jacqueline Pascal and Gilberte Pascal-Périer,” which is on Blaise’s sisters, also scholars.

I wonder how much traction this will get. It’s not a general strike, but a national walkout still escalates No Kings and is a step in the right direction.
Daily reminder from now until Jan. 20, the day of the nat'l "Free America" walkout, sponsored by Women's March. Find an event in your community and participate--preferably w/the largest gathering in your area. Large masses of protesters have maximum impact. www.womensmarch.com (www.womensmarch.com)

The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change.

It’s perfectly coherent if you see power and dominance as the goal.
Trump tells protesters in Iran to ‘take over,’ promising U.S. help. But here in the US he’s crushing protesters? Talk about Idiocy!

I will add that one thing a lot of people outside the USA don’t get is how massive it is. The distance from Portland to Tampa is equal to Reykjavik, Iceland to Ankara, Turkey. That there has been pushback in Chicago, Portland, Minneapolis, and LA isn’t nothing.
A long time concerns of mine is that we as American citizens often treat politics like fantasy football. Pick your team, sit back, hope they win. Social media posting is like yelling at the TV after a bad play or unfair call. Citizenship as an entitlement but not as an obligation.

I’m not immune.
Sad how many who think voting every 4 years or so equals holding government accountable

When you think of the Constitutional Convention as a department meeting where no one agrees and everyone just wants to go home it all makes a lot more sense.
So it turns out that the much vaunted Constitution of he United States of America isn’t actually fit for purpose?

Online petitions are the Disney ride of activism. You know that no matter how they start, at the end there’s always going to be someone trying to take your money.

💯

I was devastated I didn’t get this one job. It went to someone way less experienced with no publications… then basically the whole department got fired a few years later.
