On the internet, no one knows you're a cat.

Recovering tech/startup exec and beginner Buddhist chaplain. Student of Lama Tsultrim Allione and member of the Tara Mandala global Sangha. Childless cat mom and passable knitter.
Today's Obvious Deep Thought: Waiting for someone to die is the hardest waiting of all. (Close 2nd: waiting to see if someone will pull through.) Doesn't matter if they are going fast or slow. It's sad, beautiful, terrifying, moving, and excruciating all together. #chaplaincy #chaplain #death

Yeeikes. So much for freedom of religion.
Hegseth wants to make his "Christian Nationalist" church the sole church recognized by the Pentagon, and he is terminating chaplaincy contracts with Catholics and mainstream protestants. This is what "freedom of religion" means to Trump.

A note to future historians:
if you are wondering
why we let things get so bad,
(why we let things get even worse)
please understand
it’s not that we didn’t know
what was happening
(or what we could do)
it’s that ultimately
too many of us
just did not want
to be inconvenienced.

pretty weird how there's always billion dollars just lying around whenever ICE needs concentration camps but there's never any money when children need healthcare or a simple school lunch. oh well just one of those things I guess

This is Washington at its worst.

We need to ban Congressional stock trading.

Another sign that the dollar’s dominance is in trouble: US importers are increasingly being asked by their foreign counterparties to settle transactions in currencies other than the US dollar, such as euros, RMB, Mexican pesos, and Canadian dollars.
Many Exporters No Longer Want Dollars, US Bank Executive Says
When Paula Comings, the head of currency sales for US Bancorp, talks to US importers, she increasingly hears the same message: Their foreign counterparties no longer want to be paid in dollars.

Yes, they’re going after Medicare too. Trump’s bill guts help for 1,300,000 vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities by changing how they enroll in programs that cover out-of-pocket costs. Many will skip care. Some will die. Don’t let them hide it.
Yes, They’re Going After Medicare Too
A wonky change in Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill would hammer some of the very people Republicans insist they are protecting.

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands.

Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

“The study estimated the cuts could cause nearly 2 million people to lose their primary doctor, 1.3 million people to not fill medications they need and 380,270 women to skip a mammogram. More than 16,600 people could die as a result of losing access to or forgoing care, the researchers estimated.“
Proposed Medicaid cuts could lead to thousands of deaths, study finds
Several provisions in the bill passed by House Republicans last month, including Medicaid work requirements, would lead to the loss of coverage for millions of people.

political press is doing a real disservice by basically not reporting the nuances of public opinion on deportations, and creating the appearance that most americans support the stephen miller-style gestapo tactics
Should we deport people who have lived here for many years without committing any crimes? 61% no, 24% yes.

Should we should deport people as quickly as possible even if it means more mistakes, or do our best to make no mistakes even if it takes longer?

Quickly: 19%
Minimize mistakes: 74%

Last Friday, Trump's EPA shut down a Biden-era website mapping locations of dangerous chemical plants.

The chemical industry, which gave over $1M to Trump's inauguration, heavily lobbied the Trump administration to scrap the website. See how this works?
The Government’s Chemical Disaster Tracking Tool Just Went Dark
The chemical lobby demanded Trump make the locations of high-risk chemical plants secret. The EPA did just that.

It's difficult to grasp how bizarre this is.

To wrap my brain around the idea, I made a list of things the FDA is responsible for, and that reporters now have no one at the agency to ask about... 🧪🛟
