I didn't see this talked about much but "Tower Five" the studio behind Empire of the Ants quietly closed this summer.
The game wasn't perfect but it was charming and I'm proud to have a physical copy to remember it by. I was hoping they'd get another shot. 🙃

So I usually try to avoid conversations like this. I have sunk 4+ years into the same title, a game for the game's sake.
For the first time in my entire career as a developer I've found myself sidelining my dream projects in favour of prototyping things that 'people who buy indie games would like'

If the only thing that wins is the runaway viral hit, if all that the media can talk about, if all the streamers can play is that one viral game.
Then passion , art and experimentation dies.... because all that is left to survive...... is to gamble and become that game.

I was inspired! Fully based on gut feeling with no criteria, but I couldn't cut it to 25 and went with 30.
Reality is there's like 300 games I'd consider my favourites but I wanted to include influential games that I'd still play at the drop of a hat.

One thing that makes indie games so special is that the developers get to focus really hard into a niche. Either visually or mechanically.
Take your favourite game / genre and go all in on honing and expanding the idea. The crunchy and intricate stuff that a larger studio can’t waste time on.
