My most recent article is now online! This research was part of my dissertation, in which I compared sample preparation and instrumental analysis methods (ICP-MS and XRF) for archaeological sediment chemistry.

The pace at which we are producing technologies that were *literally* the subject of a Black Mirror episode is astounding.

Is it just me, or is Interfolio suddenly very glitchy? I don't remember having much trouble with it in previous years, but this year I have had a lot of trouble getting it to successfully upload my documents.

They are forcing the privatization of industries—including the space industry—by illegally decimating governmental capacity that has been built up over the last century, and which will be too expensive to replace once it is gone.
Reposting to correct an error: trump admin is quietly gutting 13 buildings and about 100 laboratories at Goddard campus that has been instrumental to Hubble and James Webb telescope missions. Staff say they’ve be locked and told to move equipment. Anything left behind will be thrown away.

There is something to say here about how the growth of digital methods as incentivized the replacement of other other preservation/repatriation strategies with digital alternatives...
I see that @whitehousehistory.bsky.social put out a statement yesterday stating that they were able to complete a “comprehensive digital scanning project” to document the East Wing, and that the historic artifacts have been preserved and stored.

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.

If any video essayists want to do a deep dive on why I am suddenly getting tons of AI-generated "we know where witches are born" and "here is your witch sign" ads on Youtube, that would be great, hahaha.

I never liked olives and was told to try them again when I turned 30. Unfortunately, I still don’t like them 😭

Quite problematic when one works around the Mediterranean.
Olives are mine, too. Came completely out of left field.
Does anyone have any foods they used to despise growing up that you've completely 180'd on and now love?

The ones that stand out for me are Olives. Quiche and recently fresh tomatoes.

I used to friggin hate tomatoes. Now I can slice a fat beef tommy and eat it with a bit of salt and pepper. Lol.

I think in part the higher education funding crisis and the LLM-teaching crisis actually strike at the same problem, which is that education doesn't work without a broad, society-wide sense that the *actual content* of education - not the credential - is valuable.

Agreed—this is yet another poorly-thought-through political stunt, which characterizes a lot of GOP policy these days.

That said...as someone who grew up in Houston, I will admit to being a little offended on behalf of the city when it didn't get one of the shuttles originally 🫤
Robert's story is a fantastic job of reporting why Cruz and Cornyn's plan to steal the Space Shuttle Discovery from the Air and Space Museum and bring it to Houston should be DOA
Two Texas senators have introduced legislation that would strip the Smithsonian of the retired space shuttle Discovery and send it to Houston for display...
