Love it!

These trees look like they have enough light. They put some trees in next to some retail /apartments by my house, but the trees were on the north side of the building and *close* to the building, so they got no light and died.

They just ripped out the stumps last month.

I've been planning & poking at a memoir of the early days of being online (I started in 1985, before the web was even invented, and blogged since '94). Don't know if I'll ever have the strength to finish it, but this is a great snapshot of what the gold rush days were like.
I wrote about what it was like to go online for the first time 30 years ago. How hard and complicated it seemed, and then how amazing this entirely new world was. Including some extracts from my 1995 diary.

Anyway my point is my shoulders still hurt as does my ass from sitting on the unpadded aluminum canoe seat

I went out on a canoe for the first time in a while. A stiff wind blew us all the way to the other side of the lake in about 6-7 minutes.

The rest of the canoe rental time was “struggle to make it across the lake then fish for 15 minutes”

Back when I first got here, I said something like the strength, longevity, and general experience of this place would be determined by how well and how quickly they implemented a strong culture of moderation and codes of values.

So. I was right about that.

I made a page on my website about my cast iron pans

It’s crappy and very first drafty and I’m in the middle of adding more images but I want to take a picture of each piece in use so it’s going to take a while

www.crazybutable.com/cast-iron/my...

It’s not even linked anywhere else on my site yet

this is great
When people say "We used to drink raw milk from our own cow and it was fine,"

That's... usually not the case!

In families w their own cow, the mom usually boiled it before using.

We just forgot bc that's a boring chore that mom did. And who pays attention to that?

Wisconsin does something similar with Milwaukee

Whole city is falling apart on an infrastructure level because for decades the city tax revenue went to the state, who turned around and gave them a pittance in return. Now the city is “collapsing” and it’s all because “democrats are in charge”

Finished reading The Worst of All Possible Worlds, last book of the Salvager’s trilogy by @alexwhite.bsky.social
To say these three books are my favorite I’ve ever read is to seriously undersell it. How lucky I am to have gotten to experience them. If you have the chance, absolutely read them.

It’s more than a bit disturbing that if you get big enough online (by which I mean like over 1,000 followers), there’s almost certainly at least one person who hates your guts who’s never interacted with you at all.

I'm having a rough go of it lately, and have been thinking: everyone is going through something, and you have no idea what it is, or how it's affecting them.

Quote post this is if you're going through something, and maybe we'll all realize that we aren't as alone as we feel right now.

Her primary arguments are:

What happens when the exhaust rusts off the van and we have to replace it?

We have no outlets on the exterior of the house for this.

Whereas my argument in favor is

Okay you have called my bluff to the point where I have to acknowledge that I live in a society and have to get approval from my own wife before I spend 150 dollars on Halloween decorations. Hang on I’ll see if I can convince her
