My statement on the Trump Administration’s actions in Venezuela.
For decades, presidents of both parties have irresponsibly expanded presidential power, circumventing both domestic and international safeguards in the name of national security. No modern American administration, however, has so routinely ignored the Constitution and misled Congress as the current one. I have fidelity to our Constitution even if I do not have sympathy for Nicolás Maduro. We live in the shadow of endless wars over regime change and oil, often launched in the language of democracy and safety. We have seen how overestimating the capacity for a peaceful transfer of power can lead to the illusion of short term success, while undermining our own security and global influence in the long term. At a minimum, these individual actions legally and substantively demand Congressional action and public consultation. But collectively, the military operations we have seen in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and, now, on land in Venezuela, present a significant escalation of unilateral action that betrays a larger goal by this administration. Beyond arguments for or against any individual action, the Trump Administration is clearly seeking to remake the global order in a way that will, ultimately, benefit authoritarians and adversaries. Our values and principles as a nation matter most when we have seemingly altruistic reasons to violate them. I oppose a “might makes right in my neighborhood” foreign policy. It is amoral, illegal, dangerous, and lays the foundation for bad actors like Russia and China. History is littered with conflict, atrocities, and global wars ushered in under that philosophy. And those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.
