Pro tip for politicians considering a pipeline of dilbit to BC's north coast. If you're trying to miraculously turn Alberta red, dream on. You could build 2000 pipelines, those dumb F's won't give you seats. What you may well do is lose seats in BC over another pipeline and you won't gain them in AB

This thread sharing my comments to city council today on the proposed Vancouver “austerity” city budget may seem very local, but a LOT of cities, provinces and even countries are facing severe austerity budgets right now. You might find how I tried to push back to be useful. If so, please share.
“My name is Brent Toderian. I’m a resident of Vancouver. I’m also a city planner, a former chief planner for Vancouver, and now an advisor to cities across Canada & around the world.

Council knows I don’t make a habit of this. I can count on one hand the times I’ve spoken to council as a citizen.”

Sports betting is responsible for harassment of tennis players. This includes death threats. Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Katie Boulter and Elina Svitolina have spoken out recently about this. Canada's own Rebecca Marino quit tennis for a while, in part because of this harassment. I support this ban.
Over 40 senators write to Prime Minister Carney urging him to ban sports betting ads.

Hey Canada! The mayor-elect of NYC needs security clearance! Yet we have a Leader of the Opposition who refuses security clearance! Don’t you think any MP should have security clearance?
An early test of the future Mamdani-Trump dynamic? Security clearance.

Before taking office as NYC's mayor, Mamdani will need a top-level security clearance from the federal government — something Trump has revoked before to punish his political enemies.

Higher fronts on cars—especially SUVs, which now account for more than half of the European new car market—significantly increase the death rate when pedestrians and cyclists are struck, says a report issued today by T&E.

Yes. Cap SUV hood heights and ban unsafe designs.
“The rise in high-fronted SUVs poses a clear and growing threat to public safety, especially for children,” states the report. “With no benefit to society, it’s time for lawmakers at all levels to act.” Via @carltonreid.com in @forbes.com.

@mark-carney.bsky.social We could do this too! If only we would stop subsidizing oil, especially, but gas too. Clean energy is the future. Trying to "capture carbon" is pandering to the past.
Two-thirds of California's power comes from clean energy.

For 9 in 10 days so far this year, we were 100% powered for some part of the day by clean energy.

The Golden State has become the world's fourth-largest economy because of our climate leadership, not in spite of it.

@wtatour.bsky.social So disappointed. Went to my WTA-TV app to watch the replay of the Singles final. After 20 minutes, the sound and picture were no longer in sync. Tried rebooting twice with no luck. Unwatchable! And then I wanted to watch the Doubles final - not available on replay yet. Boo.

Why don't we have drop boxes for mail in ballots in BC and Canada? Yes, one can drop off the ballot at an office or at the polls but why not at a drop box at a mall, grocery store or neighbourhood (like they do in California). Maybe it would encourage more people to vote.
