Day 124 - Not sure how to deal with the poop emoji on my head. 'Brain fog' sounds light and fluffy, but this shit's heavier than lead.

A good write up by VICE—short, clear, to the point—on Pretorius' continued work on microclots.

Even after they'd been anonymized, an AI program was able to identify long COVID patients 91% of the time just by looking at microclots and NET (neutrophil extracellular trap) patterns.
A New Study Could Explain Why Long COVID Lingers for So Many
A long COVID microclots study suggests your lingering brain fog and exhaustion might come down to microscopic clots that just won’t quit.

In ALS, muscles produce less microRNA-126, leading to an increase in TDP-43, which gradually destroys motor neurons.

When researchers added extra microRNA-126 to tissues from ALS patients and to mice with the disease…

THE PROCESS
REVERSED (!!!)

Unrelated, but this gives me hope #LongCOVID #MECFS
Muscle-derived miR-126 regulates TDP-43 axonal local synthesis and NMJ integrity in ALS models - Nature Neuroscience
Ionescu, Ankol et al. show that, in ALS mouse and iPSC models, TDP-43 aggregation at NMJs stems from aberrant axonal translation, normally repressed by muscle EV-derived miR126. Loss of miR126 in ALS ...

This communication from Dr B is reassuring, and a wise alert not to underplay SARS2 Covid infection. Gut and marrow infections are hard for immune systems to clear, which is why long covid is serious. I don't know why the disease weren't called SARS2 like the virus. It would be less confusing 😕
So all of the evidence points to Long Covid being due to residual infection in places like the gut and bone marrow. That is where the confusion arises, because that is not-post infection, that is actual infection.

And pretty much all viruses alter immunity during infection

"Why does everything have to be political?"

1—Because it dictates policy
2—Policy dictates outcomes
3—Outcomes dictate our collective future

And so far, the future looks pretty grim

The Johns Hopkins long covid questionnaire they send out to us “novid controls" every 3 months now includes “Politics” among potential stress-causing factors. If we want any more indication of how things are going in North America (and elsewhere).

To anyone who wants no nonsense takes on all the "breakthroughs", trials and rumored treatments for #LongCOVID and #MECFS, I highly recommend www.s4me.info.

It's a community of knowledgeable people who pick apart methodology and look for the signal amid so much noise. Evidence-based, or bust. ✊

People think Chronic Fatigue Syndrome—be it COVID-induced or otherwise—means being more tired than most. It's not

It's your body's sudden inability to rest, no matter what you do

And when you manage to sleep, it isn't restorative. What is #LongCOVID? Like #MECFS, a permanent state of leaden unrest

NGL, I don't look forward anymore.
I just keep my eyes on the ground.
One foot in front of the other.

That is, when #LongCOVID even allows me to.

So it would seem I am every woman.
And I say this as a man.

Granted, one in touch with his feminine side, but still. Not cool, mother nature. Not cool at all. #LongCOVID

Day 1162—I hope not. I initially thought not. But now I'm not so sure.

I say again: Day 1162. That's 18592 waking hours of utter incapacitation. Lifelessness.

All because of one mild COVID infection.

My Long COVID looks an awful lot like ME/CFS, which has been around for decades. And has no cure.

Are you referring to the #NACBS?

If it's any consolation—it won't be—I'm IN Montréal. A 20 minute walk from the venue. And in the same boat as you 😞

Not a prof, just a former History Maj. I couldn't go even if I wanted to. My point: I see you, I feel you, I'm sorry. #LongCOVID #MECFS
Day 1072—Why does ME/CFS score so low in quality of life? Because it stunts one's ability to perform daily activities. You can't function. You can't attend functions. Try as you might to carefully pace, PEM crashes are inevitable—and severe. So you remain. Alive but not living; barely even here.

Day 1161—My neighbour's a philosophy professor. He’s been a beacon of light in these dark times. His latest advice?

You wonder how life would be if you died
Those of us with ME/CFS get to see it while still alive

Your life's work goes unfinished
Your inability to participate in anything
makes you gradually disappear

first from events
then from the very thoughts
of the people you hold dear

This got me blocked… Wow.

American patriotism really is deeply ingrained. To the point of being a cult-like psychosis—even amongst some of its so-called progressives.

And then they wonder why things are the way they are.

Thank you @icancmeresearch.bsky.social for hosting such an incredible virtual conference. @chiefscican.bsky.social @thewhn.bsky.social

The politicization of public health has made it impossibly hard to have impartial discussions about COVID

We need more answers. Reliable, verifiable, incontrovertible answers. And the hard truth of the matter is, we simply don't have them. Yet.

But we do have warning signs. Too many to count (4/4)
Day 965 - For me, it's now been 35 months of "may":

"May be caused by"
"May mitigate"
"May increase risks"
"May instigate"
"May reduce symptoms"
"May impair neural pathways"
"May not be reversible"

965 May days.

Being prudent until we know what's up is not the same as claiming something's up—immunologically, in this case—when the evidence is not as conclusive as some suggest—I'm including the "nothing to see" camp here, who don't know either but insist on minimizing the scope of post-acute injury (3/4)

That is NOT to say SARS CoV-2 doesn't pose a serious threat. I am living proof that a mild infection can utterly disable athletic, healthy, vaccinated people. But we do not yet understand the precise mechanisms of how or why—which is also why I advocate for much more caution/prevention (2/4)

Here is why I'm increasingly reluctant to sign off on reports like the one you linked: none of the authors are immunologists (I checked), yet their warning is about COVID's immunological impact. Could they not find a single person from the field of study in question to join in? (1/4)
A lot of short cuts are being made by people who should know better—myself included

@mark-ungrin.bsky.social offers a much needed reminder, which I reformated for legibility. Know what you don't know.

Day 1154—Exercise used to make me stronger. It now makes me weaker. I won't consider myself ‘recovered’ until that has reverted back to how it was. Everything else is managing/coping, which is also crucial, but has, IMO, nothing to do with healing the underlying pathology.

Always great to see peer review experiments with actual data. SolvingForScience distinguish Quality (Q) & Impact (I) scores for papers. Q scores are based on a peer-improvement phase, followed by an I assessment by a different group. Unsurprisingly I varies more than Q 1/2
