Fellow holders of Canada PR and US citizenship, where are we risk-wise on crossing the border into the US these days? Is it still OK if you enter via a method with pre-clearance? Is it just a flat no-go? I'm weighing whether to visit my family for US Thanksgiving and would appreciate good knowledge.

I've got enough of a novel put together that I think it's worth talking to agents.

I'm pretty sure I don't know any agents socially.

Fellow writers with agents, do you have anyone you recommend for first time authors? @writerebony.bsky.social @leemandelo.bsky.social @ellenkushner.bsky.social

I did my first AI-driven interview last week. It was also my last.

The market is brutal, but I will not sell any more pieces of my soul.

I do developers docs in cloud native spaces, and I'm looking for work. If you need better docs for your project, let's chat.

It is once again time to cherish this BlueSky feature:

Went on a morning walk with my back-fence neighbour, picked up mail and gossip from the post office gal, flirted with the butcher, ate lunch at my local, waved hello and chatted with my downstairs neighbours while out and about.

I love living in a village.

Summer Sons is one of the most unsettling books I've read in the past decade. I don't think I can say enough about how powerfully or how deeply it affected me.

It's not perfect. The pacing bogs down in the middle, and you don't have to squint to see the bad guys coming a mile away.

Read it anyway.
September’s here, and fall is the perfect season for reading spooky queer books…

So why not pick up Summer Sons (southern gothic ft. gay codependency! grief! young men figuring out how to love each other! ghosts and cars and end-of-summer hot nights!)

This remains as true as it was when I wrote it.
I review a lot of technical documentation from engineers who are non-native English speakers. Please hear me: the English you're struggling to write and feeling discouraged about is so much better than whatever ChatGPT produces. There is no replacement for your particular voice and skill.

No thank you; I'm misunderstood in enough of them, already.
When I was younger if asked what super power I'd like I always said the powers of Colossus from x men. But as I get older I think the power I'd love to have is to be able to speak every language in the world. Imagine living in a world with no barriers to communication 🩷

Maybe don’t live in such a way that when you die, people act like Ewoks when the second Death Star explodes.

Cleaning up to move on, found this in my "wins" folder.

You were welcome. Thanks for saying so.

If the AI bubble really is bursting, please take this lesson from it:

Nothing marketed to you this relentlessly is ever worth it. If it was, they wouldn’t need to beg you.

/facepalm, but clever
Manager: "What's this milestone about ..'Living on a prayer'?"

Lead: "That's the documentation deliverable"

Manager: "What's the status of that?"

Lead: "We're halfway there"

Manager: "Why is progress so slow?"

Lead: "You fired Tommy"

Manager: "So?"

Lead: "Tommy used to work on the docs"

The last five minutes of Shine episode 2 have me in paroxysms. I could watch this scene again and again, it's so delicious.

It really is. 🥰
I ran about like a madwoman today collecting photos and fingerprints. Once my attorneys submit everything, I'll wait again for another 6 months at least for IRCC to do their thing.

But folks. I could be a permanent resident of Canada by the end of the year.

That's...a really powerful feeling.

🥺

Just got official confirmation—as of today, I’m a permanent resident of Canada.

I know it doesn’t always mean this for everyone, but for me…

…for me, it means I’m safe.
