This has been the thing with the Republican Party since the Clinton Administration at least: they behave like complete maniacs because they are confident that there will be no adverse consequences, because Democrats will act responsibly.

Yes, of course he is mostly targeting black soldiers. But hating and obsessing over beards has so many other racist implications - antisemitic, islamophobic, orientalist. I strongly suspect he has at least some of all of those in the mix.

It's meaningful that this is Santos. He has no friends. He has no power. He has no influence. This isn't the kind of corruption where Trump gets money or favors. This is a message: no matter how big an asshole you are or how much everyone hates you, the law does not bind you if you are a Republican.

There is no way to get into the head of guys like this, so it will remain a mystery, but does he really believe that these protests are full of people who are being paid off in some secret way? Or is he just lying?
