Ok, I admit that I didn’t see Avatar 3 and won’t. But I kind of feel like after Strange Days bombed Cameron made some kind of deal with the devil that reversed the fate of that movie: after that, every movie he was involved with would be trash, but the worse it was the more money it would make.
with every new Avatar movie there's a chorus of critics saying surely the series has lost its juice NOW and then days later the new Avatar has crossed the $1 billion threshold.

it doesn't matter if his movies are good or bad, never bet against Big Jim at the box office

I keep getting podcast ads for a slot machine game named “The Wizard of Oz: The Great and Powerful Oz.”

It’s a machine designed to rob you blind and falsely believe you can win and they named it after American literature and film’s premier fraud, con man, and humbug artist.

Should I know who these guys are?

(Googles these guys)

Aha. No. Nobody, and I say this as a normative rather than descriptive matter, should know who these guys are.
simon bazelon does the same thing that david shor does, which is to sorrowfully say that there is no choice but to adopt the substantive preferences of the people who make him rich

Oh no, I got wet cat food on my mustache and now the whole world smells like cat food. This is the worst thing that has ever happened.

As divided as the United States is right now, at least we can all agree fuck Courier, new or otherwise.

Also, 15 point? I don’t understand why that would require extra keystrokes, but who in the history of the world has ever used 15 point? Serial killers, maybe.

There is verisimilitude in the scam, sure, but they accidentally gave the name of the petty-criminals-gone-big resort where they plan their schemes to one of the characters.

Ok, I stopped paying to the news for the holiday, but things can’t get much more insane over thanksgiving, right?

Ah, crap.

The pun makes no sense - not sure it even qualifies as a pun. But it is much worse to me that the fish is in absolutely no way, shape, or form a tuna.

Who the fuck saw Green Lantern and said, “the problem with this movie is that there isn’t enough of it”?

I understand that our ruling class consorts with wealthy criminals, and that extreme wealth in fact encourages criminality. And I know wealth doesn’t come with intelligence. But the someone told Epstein that there was video of Trump sucking Bill Clinton’s cock, and he thought, “sounds legit to me.”

One of the cultural things we have lost since I was a teenager is television networks with a comprehensible brand. We used to know what each network was about and they were all different: Fox was edgy, NBC was the voice of urban yuppies, ABC was suburban families, CBS was old people.

Why are so many Democratic politicians so convinced that the way to win as a Democrat is to unrelentingly talk shit about Democrats? Even if there was any truth in this, and there isn’t, why does Pete think anyone would want to vote for him based on it?
This is a straightforward Republican attack line, what the fuck is he doing

The story of the sandwich that was hurled
On the 10th of August in ‘25;
What a moment to be alive!

As many chose to look down and duck,
One man decided he had to stand up,
And so he wound up, and said ‘What the f___’
And gave his sandwich a freedom chuck.

This has been the thing with the Republican Party since the Clinton Administration at least: they behave like complete maniacs because they are confident that there will be no adverse consequences, because Democrats will act responsibly.
like that's the thing, I don't think they're insincere in being shocked that all of a sudden normie dems are baying for their blood. they thought the bounds of society would stop that from happening.

sorta ties into the same sheltered arguments against a lot of the post-war international order imo

Just finished reading In The Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson (not the guy who used to draw Spider-Man), and it was notable how the Nazi regime just kept stepping up the cartoonish evil of what it was doing as it learned what people were either unable or unwilling to stop them doing.

Are you trying to tell me that Zohran Mandani uses familial honorifics to indicate the nature of his relationship with a particular person rather than strictly describing the degree and nature of their consanguinity? Bad news for his rep with Hapsburgs and Bourbons.
In a bit of a tense moment, one of the La Mega co-hosts presses Mamdani on why he "lied" about his "aunt" having been scared to ride the subway after 9/11 while wearing a hijab.

Mamdani says it was "not a lie" because he refers to his father's cousin as his "aunt."

Yes, of course he is mostly targeting black soldiers. But hating and obsessing over beards has so many other racist implications - antisemitic, islamophobic, orientalist. I strongly suspect he has at least some of all of those in the mix.

Is there any act that the Trump administration can take that the New York Times is willing to just call illegal, without these wishy-washy qualifiers?
