Maps are very political. When I worked on the Facebook live video map, we were told by legal we had to make sure we showed disputed borders correctly for each country’s version of things. This was because it was actually illegal in some countries to do otherwise.
years have passed and google hasn’t still corrected pronunciation of Māori place names on google maps but the corporation is managing to implement change the on gulf of mexico within days
