Polymetallic 👏 nodules 👏 are 👏 a 👏 renewable 👏 resource! "If you come back in tens of millions of years, you will find nodules back on the seafloor where we have taken them away."
www.rnz.co.nz/internationa...

Here's the ridiculous quote from Hans Smit:
Smit says it takes a million years for the nodules to grow back, and it is guaranteed that they would grow back, "because it's a natural process, it's just a very slow process."
Cook Islands confronts critical questions on identity as debate on deep sea mining grows
The question facing its people is no longer just about mining - but about identity, sovereignty, stewardship, and the ocean that binds them all.

This is a brutal article. "What I've learned in the past few yrs is that the political imagination of the rt wing is far more developed than the political imagination of the left, & contrary to the left it also possesses the means to make that imagination materialize." Still, specks of light in it.

"The Negev is not a blank canvas." The State's displacement of the Bedouins, faciliated by framing the Negev as a barren landscape ready for settlement or tree-planting, is a long ongoing, cruel project.
Through different means, the ultra-nationalist ideology of Israel's far-right aims to oppress and marginalize Palestinians, not just in Gaza and the WB, but the Palestinian citizens of Israel as well. Join us in rejecting their supremacism.

For anyone trying to get a mile high view of affect in Israeli politics v-a-v Palestine right now, this thread is a very good one.
I need you to understand that Gaza, IN ITS ENTIRETY, is about the size of Las Vegas, but with more than 3x the population (source🎁🔗 wapo.st/4d45nZ6).

Which means that the entire population (again: 3x that of Las Vegas) is on the brink of literally starving to death, within just a few miles of food.
We are still supporting Palestinian families by distributing critically needed potable water where possible. #ChefsForGaza (4/5)

As always, @mercoglianos.bsky.social's got a super informative discussion of the state of shipping. Here, it's the impact of tariffs--what we can already see from looking at port data and what we can expect to come. Alarmist, no. Alarming, yes.
1/Everyone has to be careful about misreading shipping data. This chart from @MarineTraffic shows normal density for containerships and shows icons for all vessels destined for the US.

We tried deep-sea mining in U.S. waters already -- back in 1970 -- off the South Carolina coast.

Scientists returned to the undersea site in 2023 to see what it looked liked now. One told me: "It's like they were there yesterday."
