Tuttle Creek Lake gifted me an eerie Halloween Eve morning 🎃I'll just be over here clinging to these spooky vibes the rest of the year.

This year has been in slow motion, except October, my favorite month ever, which was only 2 days long....make it make sense 😭

Last week in #limnology I realized I could mirror what I was seeing on the fancy scope onto the tv screens in our new teaching lab. This brought me so much joy🤩 This is #micrasterias The bilateral symmetry and the clear separation (isthmus) between the semi-cells is a characteristic of #desmids

Being a good scientist and a good advisor are completely independent! Academia needs to REQUIRE mentorship training for faculty. Well-supported students and faculty are more likely to produce high quality science and have higher productivity. We need to do better and I'll happily die on this hill.
"...researchers who invest time in their students tend to lead more-productive, more-collaborative groups and attract stronger future students than those who do not." "Time spent with the next generation of scientists is an investment."

What makes PhD students happy? Good supervision
Supervisors who invest in positive mentoring relationships with their PhD candidates also reap the benefits for their own research.

June 11 -27, 2026, I'm teaching a 16-day field course on stream ecology. It's heavily focused on independent research projects, so they get some exposure to field research. Open to students from any institution. DM with your email if you want a poster to send your students. #Ecology #PUI #insects

I always have this book within reach when writing! You wouldn't think reading about writing would keep your attention, but this guide is beyond helpful and very clearly simplifies scientific writing. 10/10 recommend!
It's off my desk! I've just sent the manuscript for the 3rd edition of 'The Scientist's Guide to Writing' to the publisher (Princeton U. Press).

"It's just a revision. It will be easy!" - and other lies I tell myself...
The Scientist’s Guide to Writing
Note: A third edition of The Scientist’s Guide to Writing is currently in production, for publication in mid- to late 2026. Watch this space for updates.  While running experiments and collec…

This is great to keep in mind! I also try to remember the objectives of the project and if my comments/edits are aligned with those or just me adding my personal preferences.
One thing I always try to do as a reviewer/editor when recommending a change is to think about whether or not the resulting improvement to the paper/software justifies the amount of time I think it will take the author to address it. The bigger the ask, the greater the need in order to justify it.
