MSCA has supported many ECR and amazing research over the years.
Yet, the increase in applicants (+64%) for MSCA postdoctoral fellowships (linked to ECR fleeing the US?) has not been met by an increased budget.
Thus a score of 96.4/100 is not enough this year to have a project funded.

Just starting to realize that double-blind reviewing (which is good) kind of conflicts with preprint publishing (which also is good). Has this been discussed?

⚠️Paper out ⚠️
Here, we tested if extra feeding lesser kestrel nestlings during development (and under a heatwave) can help them deal with extreme heat. Spoiler: they really struggle. Extra food helps them grow when it’s just hot, but not under a heatwave. See 👇

Extra food buffers thermoregulatory costs during early development but does not reduce heatwave-induced mortality in nestlings of a cavity-nesting raptor
Global climate change is increasing both average temperatures and the occurrence of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves. These changes pose majo…

Energetics link long‐term environmental variations to breeding success in a wild penguin population
Using a unique 25-year dataset, we uncover how environmental changes scale up from individual to population responses. We show that sea ice drives individual energetics, while parental foraging effor...

Yet, to be honest, this is not the main field site, where proper toilets were installed a few years ago

Point of no return: academic #funding is at a tipping point. When the effort and money spent applying for grants equals or exceeds the funding awarded, the system stops serving science and starts draining it. Time to rethink how we fund #research.

Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding
With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

Pollutant Exposure Shapes Mitochondrial Bioenergetics in a Wild Seabird
Laboratory studies show that mercury (Hg) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can impair mitochondrial bioenergetics, which is a vital process for cellular energy production. However, their...

No paper from me or my lab will ever be submitted to an MDPI journal - including any of their superfluous "special issues". I will very rarely (if ever) cite MDPI papers. And I will never review for them. deevybee.blogspot.com/2024/08/gues...

The same goes for FrontiersIn journals, among others.
