Hi all,
I am back again on blue sky after some time of dwindling Twitter engagement.

My group studies #microbiomes of wild animals, we have exciting projects in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians.

We are based at Uppsala University, Sweden. @animecol-uu.bsky.social

arXiv will no longer accept review articles and position papers unless they have been accepted at a journal or a conference and complete successful peer review.

This is due to being overwhelmed by a hundreds of AI generated papers a month.

Yet another open submission process killed by LLMs.

This is an amazing program and I was lucky enough to work with many MEME students during my time @animecol-uu.bsky.social. One of the best MSc training programs you can do if evolution is your jam!
Applications for the MEME programme (www.evobio.eu
) are now open! MEME is a research- and mobility-oriented master’s in evolutionary biology (& I’m a proud alumna!), jointly run by the Unis of Groningen, Uppsala, Montpellier, and LMU Munich, with Harvard and Lausanne as partners. Spread the word!

How do insects respond to changing climates? Our new review and analysis in @annualreviews.bsky.social suggests that phenological adaptation trumps thermal adaptation.

Climate adaptation in insects can proceed via responses in life-history traits and their thermal plasticity and through phenological shifts mediated by responses to photoperiodic cues (photoperiodism)...

Keeping cats indoors not only makes them healthier and keeps them safe, we also protect native birds and other small animals. 🐈🐦🦎
Our team has published a new study in Avian Conservation Ecology showing that #cats kill between 19–197 million #birds each year in Canada!

In the time it has taken you to read ~3 posts (1 min) 114 birds have been killed at the paws of cats in Canada.

New manuscript out today in @ecol-evol.bsky.social, led by my grad student Anais. We collated data from thousands of recent animal pop-gen studies to test 3 simple hypotheses: does genomic (1) diversity decrease (yes), (2) differentiation increase (yes), both with increased IUCN-endangerment?

Bioinformaticians / computational biologists take note - know where you should take your OS tool chain from and do not introduce backdoors.
Heads up: ignore samtools dot org, similarly minimap2 dot com and likely others. It's owned by a known phishing site and while the binaries they offer look valid currently (but note they may be serving us different binaries to others), that could change.

Ie: it's not us (Samtools team)! Be warned

Anyone with experience doing #metagenomics #microbiome of small insects, e.g. mosquitoes? 🦟🦠

Trying to figure out feasibility of doing individual metagenomes vs pools of individuals. I see both approaches are still used in the literature. My concern would be getting enough DNA from individuals.
