One chart that didn't make it in the final paper was looking at party membership more recently. The result is steady decline for all parties except for brief flash-in-the-pan bursts around successful elections (further complicated by NSW Labor's strange habit of offering three-year memberships)

‘58% of respondents agreed that the rights of individuals should never be sacrificed for the good of the community.’

[squints]

‘Also, 54% of respondents agreed that the safety of society is always more important than the rights of individuals.’

I suppose not taking a massive step backwards counts as a win. I wrote for Crikey about copyright, AI, Anthropic and the TDM exemption that the Albanese government has finally ruled out.
If the Productivity Commission had any credibility to provide advice on either copyright or cultural policy in the first place, it has squandered it.
Sure, tech giants can't train AI on copyright content for now, but the battle isn't over

The biggest shock about this Barnaby Joyce news is that he’s only 58. Looks at least mid-70s. I guess that’s what a mostly booze diet will do.

What is it with tenured academics who have the research output of a kindergarten cloaking their dumb-dumb political opinions as ‘analysis’? And why do the ABC and the Conversation keep being duped by these charlatans?

Nothing I do as a professor is about supplying information and knowledge. My work in a classroom is about teaching students how to think critically, analyse evidence, and reach conclusions that are reasonable and supported by the available information.

GenAI does none of this for students
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."

And, in the Watchmen HBO Universe was the President of the United States who promoted racial equality through reparations for slavery.
Far as I can tell, Robert Redford was:
* successful at everything he tried
* genuinely intelligent & insightful
* desired by women
* envied by men
* an absolute mensch to everyone he dealt with
* a tireless, lifelong philanthropist
... and he died peacefully in his sleep.

10/10 life. No notes.

it has definitely been the case for a long, long time that the people who yelled most loudly about 'free speech' were always the most rabidly dedicated to enacting obscene punishments on those speaking out of turn.

Some of what went on with my appeal:

• 'Appeal script crashed twice and did not record the outcome.'

• 'Thomas was not sent any notification his payments had been suspended, only the final cancellation letter.'

• 'his payments were cancelled [when] penalty period did not apply'

A symphony of it.

It really seems like the people with the most to gain from treating hate speech as a harmless, fun game for profit are the loudest on the ‘Nothing justifies violence’ megaphone.

I have known Dr Allen an extremely long time. What most readers would miss is that she has a long history of being extremely resilient and overcoming obstacles.
For her to be pushed this far is a sign of how extraordinary the circumstances are. Devastating.
