Was there any coverage of the recent record warmth in both the Arctic and Antarctic? Multiple global datasets now confirm these records, and I think it's really quite striking.

Here's some very quick plots showing NOAAGlobalTempv6 data from October too. And see my earlier posts.
A line graph shows the time series of Arctic mean surface temperature anomalies for each October from 1850 through 2025. There is a long-term increasing trend and large year-to-year variability. The mean surface temperature anomaly in October 2025 was 3.78°C for this region. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1910-2000 climate baseline. All data is from NOAA/NESDIS/NCEI NOAAGlobalTemp v6.0.0 on this graphic. A line graph shows the time series of Antarctic mean surface temperature anomalies for each October from 1850 through 2025. There is a long-term increasing trend and large year-to-year variability. The mean surface temperature anomaly in October 2025 was 1.43°C for this region. Whilst its easy to get used to scary graphs, this one made me pause! The 2025 State of the Cryosphere report published yesterday has this one overlaying observations of #AMOC slowdown against model predictions.

As if it wasn't 'bad enough' already, climate models underestimate future Ocean Heat Uptake, because them get present-day Antarctic sea-ice wrong.

The Catastrophic Outcome of 3°C But is 3°C really a win? What will this amount of heating mean for peo- ple in the United States? How alarmed, exactly, should Americans be? Well, 3°C of global heating would likely mean that for around three months of the year, the entire East Coast all the way to Maine, the Midwest to the Great Plains, and half of California would be so hot that being outdoors would put you at risk of death. Southern California, the Southwest, the Deep South, and Florida would be this deadly hot for nearly half the year.? And that's just the back- ground heat. The effects of this heat in the climate system —what are blandly known as the "impacts" of climate change should also be considered. And what the extreme weather already emerging across the globe, as well as the latest research, suggests is something quite frightening: the way our climate system is responding even to low levels of warming indicates that a 3°C world might look very much like the 4°C or s°C world it had seemed like we had avoided. This is not to say that scientists have failed to predict what is happening in some way-their projections of how much the planet will warm at rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have been entirely

I think most people think this is not much; judging from the pictures. Unless you realize that sweetwater is only ~3% of the global water and most of this is/was in glaciers or not available to us. It is really stupid that we let this happen, despite having all the education and research.

I saw today the dramatic effects of global heating up close. This is the Bonhus glacier in SW Norway, the photo on the left is from 1890. Like all glaciers in Norway it is shrinking rapidly.

I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.

The subject of my chapter in this great book? Rewilding is NOT land abandonment.

Having spent over 16 years rewilding a West Cork farm, I know very well that it requires a lot of hands-on input undoing human damage, eg eradicating invasive plants.

Rewilding needs people, and a lot of LOVE.
