The reason America never moved on from it's evil, racist past is because they never sunk to the level of the people that hated it's existence. The Confederates should never have been welcomed back into polite society. They should have been executed or imprisoned for life & their land given away.
I'm certain that sinking to the level that the people who hate you believe you to be at will be very helpful.

if you are ever tempted to write off the residents of a "red" (i.e., gerrymandered) state and say "set them adrift, let them secede, they deserve what they voted for", you are missing all the thousands of stories like this where the human beings in those states are pushing back every single day
