The wool of gay sheep made its debut appearance at a New York fashion show as part of a collection campaigning to save the animals from slaughter. The fashion line, called “I Wool Survive”, was launched by designer Michael Schmidt after he learnt that working farms often killed rams that refused to mate with their female counterparts. The Los Angeles-based designer, who has styled Madonna and Cher, partnered with Rainbow Wool, a German non-profit that rescues non-mating sheep, and Grindr, the LGBT dating app, to bring what he said was an “animal” and “human rights story” to the runway. Mr Schmidt told the New York Times: “The idea it’s selling is that homosexuality is not only part of the human condition, but of the animal world. That puts the lie to this concept that being gay is a choice. It’s part of nature.” Tristan Pineiro, the vice president of brand marketing for Grindr, said the collection could challenge anti-LGBT views, saying: “You can’t say the sheep were corrupted by woke culture.” He said the collection, featuring items including wool hats, dungarees, a sailor’s outfit and a dressing gown, acted as a “metaphor for how gay people are treated across the world”. Scientists have long noted the prevalence of “male-oriented” rams in herds. One study, published in 2010, found that as many as 8 per cent of the ram population exhibited a preference for same-sex mating partners. Michael Stücke, 52, the co-founder of Rainbow Wool, said it was this realisation that led him to establish a business entirely based on the wool of gay sheep. He said there was “a lot of pressure” growing up on a farm in Germany as it was “pretty conservative” and there was an expectation he would take over his family farm and get married. However, knowing he was gay from a young age, Mr Stücke eventually came out to his parents at 24 and decided to start his own sheep farm, with 35 of his now 500-strong herd being rescued gay rams. He and his business partner then went on to launch a company using the wool of non-mating sheep, with proceeds going to LGBT charities and projects. The I Wool Survive collection was shown on a New York fashion show stage this week and featured 37 pieces of knitwear, from polos to shorts and robes. Commenting on the fashion line, Mr Schmidt said: “I really wanted to lean into the gay.”
