If #ADHD and being neurodivergent in this society

is kicking your butt

I can help.
Tell people you appreciate them.

Don't save your words for the funeral.

I brought you flowers!

I hope your neighbour doesn't mind

(Such a lovely garden)

When did Americans become such skeptics

Sadly it's not always safe to disclose to employers if you have ADHD (or other condition affecting how you work).

Maybe HR is understanding but your manager doesn't quite get it. Or vice versa.

#Prioritizing tasks can - as illustrated in this image from @DaniDonovan - be a challenge for many children and adults experiencing #ADHD.

If I turn up as myself, some people will connect with me.

If I hide myself, I'm alone and I carry a heavy mask.

As a neurodivergent young person I learned: Some people will judge me and misinterpret me regardless of how I turn up. Might as well be me.

It's super subjective but...

"What We Do in the Shadows" is the only TV show I've ever known where the American remake was better than the original.

Procrastination when you're not doing things, & anxious about the not doing, and not enjoying the not doing and avoidance…

Is a very good example of executive dysfunction. Often it's from trying to force with willpower, rather than understanding and strategies.

If you need support, that's my job.

How do you stay sane/reduce the stress that comes with ADHD and executive dysfunction?

A big one for me: I mute most phone notifications otherwise they drive me crazy.

I only allow notification noises from messaging apps where I expect to hear from clients.

I knew I was becoming more secure when someone reacted impatiently to me over a small thing, & my honest reaction was, "huh, what's up with you?"

I don't always react to this way straight away (and it's not always as blatantly obvious that it's their own stuff), but I can get to it more easily now.

A great story, well-told.

"What if you were a gay, Mormon, drug-dealing, federal informant?"

Scientists need more time to think and so do I. So do you.

Emails and messaging are the OG brainrot, and scrolling makes it so much worse.

I've spent a lot of coaching time with clients on creating more distance from their phone, literally and figuratively. Much benefit.

There's a trope in ADHD/neurodivergent meme-land: You do the important thing you've stressed about & avoiding, &… you feel nothing.

No sense of reward or relief.

It's hard to build good habits when there's no internal reward.

I've had a degree of this. I've seen it in clients too. 🧵

In fairness one of my favourite things is "feminism ruined my love life and now I'm all alone" followed by a description of being the most obnoxious prick to everyone you've ever dated and calling it feminism

Thinking of doing a series of daily posts for #ADHD awareness month, but one month late.

There's a bunch of community organisers in Sydney – e.g. for creative, tech, activist, philanthropic, self-improvement or introspective/spiritual communities.

Some have been connecting and comparing notes. If you're not part of that yet, lmk.

We'll do a get-together this year.

The greatest overwhelm and mood boost hack, much of the time, is doing the thing you're avoiding.

I currently have space for new clients. If you know someone who could benefit from support, please point them in my direction. #ADHD #neurodivergent

Watching Prime Suspect, two episodes in. (Free on iView in Australia.)

It's very good. Of course, Helen Mirren is always very good.

My version of keeping up with popular culture is watching a British crime drama from 1991.

Rob Wiblin (very thoughtful poster and podcast host) once disagreed with someone and screenshotted them... and then followed with another tweet saying just "Anyone who goes after this guy is dead to me."

And I respect that. Classy.

(I'm not disagreeing with Ryan so I don't need to say it 😅)
One thing I miss about being a much smaller account on Twitter is that I used to be able to disagree with someone in a quote without it feeling inherently rude. Now there's always the chance I direct a million people at them.
PSA: if you quote post me first, you have formally invited me in

Saw a reel saying men don't like the people they're dating & don't even realise this.

(Women often don't either, but maybe they *do* know? Idk.)

The test: how many of your exes would you go out of your way to spend time with, if you knew there was no chance of a hookup?

And…

I often think about how "self-improvement" is not something we can do all by ourselves. We need people.

Sometimes those people are therapists or coaches, and sometimes they are trusted friends and family.

Related: "it does take work to love you. but guess what? you still deserve love"

Good description of executive dysfunction.

Undiagnosed ADHD is so confusing and distressing. Diagnosis (even self-diagnosis) can be a major relief.
