This is great advice especially for people who forget to eat.

Not always the best advice for those of us who forget to stop eating 😅

Tricky one. You might have saved the other colleague from feeling pressured.

Some people don't seem to be able to turn down their volume – generally not through malice at all but it doesn't help to pretend it's not an issue.

And…

Don't say "my autism makes it hard for me to parse spoken conversation"

Say: "I work best with written communication so i can take my time to understand it - it also means I can reread my reply before I send it to make sure it reflects a full understanding of the topic."

And…

Don't say "My autism makes me sensitive to sounds and temperatrues"

Say: "I work best when i can keep distractions at bay, such as noise; and can control my personal working environment"

A friend adds:

Don't say: "I'm autistic & need unambiguous instructions, don't assume my questions mean I'm grumpy about doing this work"

Say: "I ask a lot of questions because I like to make sure I get things right. It's no reflection on my willingness to work on the task."

This post is prompted by Jon Wiggens' perfect description of "strategic ambiguity", which I just discovered on Threads.

What would you add to this? A couple of great additions follow...

BONUS: Every part of this also works if you don't have ADHD. Or if you don't realise that you have ADHD.

And it encourages better work practices. That's a benefit of accessibility.

Or your present manager is great but you don't know if your future managers will be understanding.

It's generally best to start with a partial disclosure that doesn't mention ADHD.

It's crazy that's psychiatrists charge so much and don't necessarily listen.

Might help to do some kind of basic assessment and show them.

Or find a psychiatrist with relevant experience.

One big sign that it's their own stuff:

They're on the internet, being unkind to people.

I almost finished that with "lol" but they're in a sad place.
