I love @archive.org ! It’s a fantastic resource for old cookbooks!
Chef Auguste Escoffier’s "Le Guide Culinaire" (1903) is a cornerstone of culinary arts, but "The Thanksgiving Cook Book" (1911) strays from tradition. Instead of turkey, stuffing & pie, his menu features rabbit, ragout & crawfish! 🦃🥧

More cookbook reading, this time festive…

I enjoy reading about cookbooks almost as much as I enjoy reading cookbooks. Can’t wait to get stuck into this with a cup of tea later @dorothy-porker.com.

For the Czech speakers amongst you: my Nat Geo Traveller Food (UK autumn issue) feature about the day I spent gawping at mountains and eating Käsknöpfle with the delightful Kerber family in Schaan, Liechtenstein, has been translated for the Czech edition... tinyurl.com/59p6my9t

There are already many excellent travel writer starter packs circulating but I thought I'd make a Europe-specific one so that colleagues new to Bluesky can see some local faces in their feed. Do share – and though it's nowhere near finished yet, do DM me if I've missed you! go.bsky.app/2bgQ6UY

This year’s Xmas baking plans:
1) sausage rolls with an Hungarian twist - caraway & paprika are involved.
2) rum soaked fruit cake.
3) lemon iced ginger biscuits.

What are you making?

Morning all. The skies have cleared, the paths are muddy and covered in leaves, it’s 2 degrees and our heating’s gone wrong (annual tradition). Would love to see what it looks like where you are?

It’s forecast to be wet and miserable again today and snowing by the end of the week, so here’s a throwback to the last time the sun came out two and a half weeks ago.

I remember being in a school play about the Channel Tunnel when they began digging it seven (?) years earlier. For reasons that remain unclear nearly four decades on, I played a parrot. (Many thanks to my mum for my excellent costume.)
It’s 30 years since the 1st public passenger trains ran through the Channel Tunnel. Let’s turn back the clock to the late 80s and remember the optimism, particularly from British Rail at the time, of freight & passenger services connecting from right across Britain. A BR newspaper advert from 1989

Hope this list is shareable. My travel tribe is taking a while to find itself on Bluesky, but I've come with an initial list of travel writers, editors, bloggers and website owners. I'm sure I've left some out, so let me know.

Today I learned of the existence of the mini kiwi. Small, fuzz-free and mild in flavour - though Google tells me they should be acidic and sweet. These ones are from Baden-Württemberg. Immediately tempted to buy myself a plant for the garden.

Hello there, all other people on here. I shall move on to niche German food tweets in due course, but a picture of a cat - the very best cat - feels like a fairly solid way to begin.
