When my grandfather died in 2004, I was 11. At his home in Nijmegen I found a battered briefcase, unopened for years. Inside: photos, consular forms and letters — a history of falling empire, colonial decoupling and rising nationalism that marked those who lived it.

As Dutch people, we set our priorities: do the work, meet the deadline, and demand respect for our boundaries. After 5 PM or during holidays, we’re offline. If you really need us, you pay extra. A vegetable farmer doesn’t give away produce after closing time either.

“I’ve mostly only seen the tragic, mutilated side of Lebanon. What you’re describing is the contrast,” a colleague told me after I returned and talked about Beirut, including how often people spoke about resilience. The excerpt is from Beirut Fragments by Jean Said Makdisi.

We are back to a world of "spheres of influence" with authoritarian regimes pushing their hegemonic and imperial agendas through military and economic power. Left with a European Union too weak to play power politics and too morally bankrupt to still speak for a rules-based international order.

To point out that Maduro is deeply unpopular across much of Latin America and a potential majority of Venezuelans wanted him gone is not to justify Trump's actions but rather indicate that responses in Latin American societies might not conform with partisan battle lines in the US.

A long-awaited, clearly visualized investigation into Israel’s use of the M113 APC as what I’ve called a barrel bomb on wheels to destroy civilian infrastructure. Experts estimate it carries one to three tons of explosives, likely ammonium nitrate, though not confirmed.
