Caught Between States as an Empire Dissolved
A Dutch-Indonesian family’s documents from the mid-20th century reveal a painful story of separation and an administrative nightmare that prefigures today’s xenophobic politics

When my grandfather died in 2004, I was 11. At his home in Nijmegen I found a battered briefcase, unopened for years. Inside: photos, consular forms and letters — a history of falling empire, colonial decoupling and rising nationalism that marked those who lived it.

I was reading this article, which there have been many, about work stress. What I’ve seen in practice, is that a lot of people find it difficult setting boundaries. In my view, there is nothing wrong with a 9-5 mentality. If an employer wants you to work more, then they better pay you more.

Particulars of Israel-Palestine aside, it's a bit surreal seeing a mayor get grilled on foreign policy while everyone shrugs when the actual president appears to be throwing darts at a map blindfolded to decide our next war. Sorry, Cameroon. Nothing personal.
