“The Bay Area has 82 billionaires to go with 342,000 millionaires. This compares to Seattle’s 11 billionaires and 53,100 millionaires.”
Millionaire threats to leave WA are a little, well, rich
The prospect of a state income tax on millionaires has already got some of the state’s richer residents talking about leaving. History says it’s mostly just talk, writes columnist Danny Westneat.

Trump on the ballroom: "It's bigger than I told you. It's, you know -- after realizing we're gonna do the inauguration in that building, it's got all bulletproof glass, it's got all drone, they call it drone-free roof. It's dronessss -- won't touch it. It's a big beautiful safe building."

Wow. This is a remarkable story and a lesson in a good journalism — how persistence and respect can lead to insightful reporting. As I keep saying, the world is not black and white.

People forget that a century ago Sears was basically Amazon without a website. You could buy everything from underwear to entire houses from a printed catalog that was the size of a desktop computer. Sad legacy described here.

“Conservatives would never accept a left-wing government using regulatory favoritism to pressure conservative media”—but now that this is occurring at CBS, they offer “pointillistic defenses” of Bari Weiss spiking a “60 Minutes” story, @jonathanchait argues.
Stop Defending Bari Weiss
It is impossible to take her actions at face value given the context in which she is operating.

When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

This is a troubling development in what had seemed to be an atrocious move by Bari Weiss to hold a "60 Minutes" piece: The government _did_ provide several written responses to the story, which were apparently ignored. 1/6
Bari Weiss plans overhaul of CBS News and "60 Minutes" standards and procedures
The changes follow a controversy that saw her pulling a story about Trump administration deportations of Venezuelan immigrants to an El Salvador prison.

What we’re being told is that a guy who is an adjudicated rapist, who was credibly accused of sexual assault by dozens of women, who paid hush money to a porn star, who cheated on all his wives, who is mentioned hundreds of times in the Epstein files, couldn’t possibly be a sexual predator.

here's the 60 minutes cecot video part 1 of 5 - recorded/uploaded by and all credit to @jasonparis.bsky.social

I just reduced background noise, chopped the 14 minutes into 3 minute segments each compressed under 100 mb for bsky's limits, cropped and rotated a few degrees for easier viewing on here

Just within the past hour, nearly a dozen YouTube accounts have posted the pulled 60 Minutes CECOT story. CBS and Google can keep trying to take them all down, but it's sort of pointless now.

Now that it has leaked and is being posted on multiple servers worldwide, the spiked “60 Minutes” segment is likely to have far more viewers than it would have had they simply broadcast it.
