Scouting teaches boys to become men. The Scout Oath and Law gives them a set of core values to abide by. The merit badge program sparks interests that often lead to future careers. And as a boy who grew up without a father, it gave me direction I desperately needed.

U.S. ready to cut support to Scouts, accusing them of attacking 'boy-friendly spaces'

Great piece.
"What happens when an industry spends 15 years telling talented young journalists that personal brand is currency, that access is the game, that being a character in the story makes better content—and then acts shocked when someone takes that logic a few degrees too far?"
The Olivia Nuzzi Comeback Is Everything Wrong With Modern Media
Olivia Nuzzi’s comeback isn’t a personal scandal story—it’s proof that today’s media rewards access, personality, and controversy more than ethics.

Today we discovered Monkey Mountain, a county park on 855 acres with beautiful wooded hiking trails and bits of pastureland sprinkled throughout. All of it hardly used; we had the whole park to ourselves this evening as we explored one of the pastures.

I love it when code works one day, then decides to not work the following day when I hop back online.

fact: before clocks became widespread, each town had one guy who owned 24 dogs and fed one of them each hour.

that way everyone would know exactly what time it was.

What time is it? Oh, it's Captain Snuffles o'clock, they'd say

which was weird considering they didn't know what clocks were

I couldn't agree more.

Unfortunately this is also one of the biggest issues with the "Just put Linux on it" movement. It's great for power users and nerds, but the wild variation of Linux distributions makes troubleshooting for non power users very hard.

I may or may not have gotten into the Halloween candy destined for trick-or-treaters. When you think about it, though, I’m preventing children from getting cavities. It’s an altruistic action. That’s what I’m telling myself as I open another packet of Trolli Crawlers.

I unironically love getting notifications from the library that a book I put on hold months ago (and subsequently forgot about) is ready for pickup. It's like a gift from my past self!

Interesting, I just got an unprompted email requesting that I reset my MLB.com account "to keep [my] account secure." It's not an issue of password strength/reuse, and they haven't previously had a policy of timed password expiry. The email is legit.

Security incident?

Butterflies weren’t the only ones enjoying the butterfly garden at the Dillon Nature Center today; there were also lots of Common Eastern Bumble Bees! The number of pollinators we saw doing their thing was simply delightful.

Monarch butterflies were everywhere in Hutchinson, Kansas this weekend! We visited the Dillon Nature Center earlier today and were delighted at how many we saw enjoying the butterfly garden.

I saw this little fella at the Hutchinson Zoo yesterday. A yellow-shouldered drone fly was busily pollinating this Lindheimer’s beeblossom.

I just found a tandem bike on Craigslist.

I am about to purchase said tandem bike on Craigslist.

My wife and I are going to look so dorky on our tandem bike and I CANNOT WAIT.
