This is actually the original definition of emotional labor, as defined by Arlie Hochschild, the sociologist who coined the term. It refers to the labor of performing emotions in order to do your job. It is not enough to just do your job, you have to put on a performance
There is something really wrong with people who need workers to be not just competent, but slavishly fake-happy. "Slavishly" used on purpose, bc that's where this grotesquerie comes from.
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.

ALT Text benefits everyone

Alt text helps with accessibility, identifying/explaining elements you might not get to in your posts and makes your posts/work more discoverable - Make sure to toggle it on to “require alt text” in your settings

Y’all should be using ALT text on every image you post. But ESPECIALLY images with text. Like seriously. At least half the images I see nowadays have no ALT text. Please use it.

this was for a colorado measure guaranteeing universal free lunch for kids. funny how a short two-column table can say so much in so little space.
This is how it looked on the ballot.
Clear and easy to understand.

Ok, good thing I started this one early enough because it was a project! But I had to do one of my favorite birds proud. It is always fascinating to me how birds that you think of as black are actually so many different colors. Here's my turkey vulture for this month's #BirdWhisperer

“Walmart was the top employer of SNAP recipients in five states and one of the top four employers in the remaining four states. McDonald’s was among the top five employers of Medicaid enrollees in five of six states and SNAP recipients in eight of nine states.”

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Political parties must shift immediately and dramatically to the left to avoid alienating these frustrated and abandoned young women. Am I doing this right?
Our recent poll found that women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average. Nearly 80 percent of Gen Z women want abortion to be legal and seven in 10 want gender-affirming care to be accessible for trans adults.
Gen Z women are the most liberal group in the country
On issues like abortion and gender-affirming care, women 28 and younger skew substantially more left than the national average.

i think the way minis impact the physical space where the game is played is an important thing too, similar to how one might opt for handmade tokens instead of paper ones

in my intro to ttrpgs/d&d, my DM painted custom minis for each of us and it made me “feel” like i was “really” playing d&d
miniatures in games (as they sre conventionally used) are rlly interesting cuz they represent this primacy of the physical landscape over the emotional or conceptual landscape — the physical location of people is their central quality, everything else descends from this
