The first professional police force in the US began in 1838 in Boston. In 1854 only three cities had police forces: NYC, Philly, and Boston.
Attorney General Pam Bondi: "Our country was founded on law enforcement"
Bondi: "It's extremely organized. The signs they have are all matching, they're well written. And look at what's happening today. How did these people go out & get gas masks? These protesters. Would you know how to walk out on the street and buy a gas mask? Think about that. We're not gonna have it"

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power." 1/

Some day this front page may be shown in a museum exhibit to illustrate the wanton cruelty of this moment—and the joyful courage with which the people of Minneapolis responded.

It’s not so much that Trump & co don’t think slavery was important, they want to remove this history precisely *because* of how important it was. They don’t want people to learn about slavery because then people would understand how it continues to shape the landscape of inequality in America today.
Signs about the history of slavery in the U.S. and the 9 people George Washington enslaved are being removed right now at the President’s House Site in Philadelphia, across from Independence Hall, months after the Trump administration threatend to do so.

How far we have not come in 250 years.

I got tired of studies saying historians were one of the top professions that could be replaced by AI. It just didn't sound right to me.

Librarians, curators, and teachers all score as much less "replaceable", and lawyers score much, much lower still. And I think I figured out why. /1

Institutions are failing us, including universities that, in principle, ought to be standing up for academic freedom.

Academic friends, if you want to survive this moment, join the AAUP. Help yourself and colleagues at other institutions.

Delighted to see international coverage of the project in @arlingtonva.us to memorialize enslaved people. We're the 1st county in the U.S. south to do this & had huge support from the community & local govt. See if you can spot me in the crowd pic!

While other places in the US are increasingly censoring how they tell their multicultural histories to travellers, one community is highlighting them.

Hi all, do we know if anyone is working on preserving the NEH teaching resource site edsitement.neh.gov
The site is huge, so we need an organization with server space to do it using a scraper tool.

When we get through this, one item on the legislative agenda should be an NEH budget pegged, at, say, 3% of NIH's budget.
My NEH colleagues just heard from DOGE - demanding a 70% reduction in staff. Just obliterating federal funding for the humanities with no ready sources replacing.
These rumors have been confirmed, Blueskis.

I am enraged.
