The average traffic speed in downtown Toronto is ~22km/h, with rush hour slowing to ~17-20km/h. This is the same as typical bicycle speed. Bicycles aren't causing traffic congestion, drivers are. #BikeTO #TOpoli

You'll never believe how much time Toronto drivers lose to rush hour traffic in a year
A new annual traffic index estimates that Torontonians lose 100 hours, or four days and four hours, per year to rush hour traffic.

Toronto Council meets today! It's budget time. This year, the mayor has backed a low residential property tax increase (just 2.2%!) so it's not clear what council will argue about, but I'm sure they'll find something.

The meeting stream is here. I'll post happenings. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HA3...

“Toronto got itself a much better transit network today. Eglinton is not perfect, and it’s not a subway, but it will make getting across the city faster and more comfortable.”

Parking is just subsidized car storage, and doesn't cost what the true land value is worth.
Something to keep in mind the next time the city tries to repurpose parking and drivers complain that every last car is necessary at all times. The storm was two weeks ago.

The more people that choose to walk, bike and ride public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for everyone, including drivers.

EVERYONE.

There’s no “war on cars,” just an opportunity for more successful cities.

You’re being lied to. It’s time we tell #TheTruthAboutTraffic.

A piece from me in the Toroto Star today, I'll flesh out my concerns more in a post later, but the Eglinton Crosstown is good, which is a problem, because while the stations are palatial, the streetcar style trains are not high capacity.

The Eglinton Crosstown is finally set to open. But poor planning may mean it will be a victim of its own success
The new line may be too busy almost as soon as it opens.

Regular reminder that a line four western extension makes a ton of sense despite all the silliness
Toronto's expanding rail network looks nice on map but the disconnect between Lines 4 and 6 is a real problem, and it will get works if 6t ever starts running faster than the bus it replaced.

I warned them about this years ago.

Grid cities need grid transit networks.
As of tomorrow (Sunday, February 8th), this is what Toronto’s TTC network will look like. Can’t wait to ride Line 5 Eglinton (Crosstown LRT)

Ontario is so beautiful and so bikeable. We could become a world-renowned bike tourism destination with just a little vision and coordination!
But @mbonsma.bsky.social had the idea that just like the Bruce Trail Conservancy raises money to acquire land and then section off the parts that they want to add to the trail network, so could a different organization do that for a rural cycling network.

Think of the tourism opportunities.

Mark Carney's government is cutting $5B from public transit and also forcing public servants back to work. These policies benefit businesses and the wealthy, and are hostile to the well being of the average person and our planet.

So the Carney government has indeed cut $5 billion specifically earmarked for transit while not being transparent about it. This key message from the minister tries to get around that.

This would have been money to help get people out of their cars. This government is climate unfriendly.
