Last week @littleislandbooks.bsky.social sent me a copy of this verse YA novel by @rurooie.bsky.social & I have devoured it today over 2 heartbreaking bus journeys. Shorelines is a retelling of The Little Mermaid & completely not was I expecting, full of rage & injustice.

I always struggle to read it aloud because of the almost unavoidable need to sob

Support every trans, non-binary or questioning person you know. Speak out for those you don’t. Vote for politicians who want to expand humanity, not shrink it. And for god’s sake, stop buying Harry Potter or the works of those who want to ruin the lives of our loved ones out of their own ignorance.

Earlier this week, @alomshaha.bsky.social was chatting about how the message of loving each other should inform more public discourse (beyond religion).

So, for #KidsBooksFriday this week what kids books help kids to understand the importance of love in all its forms?

My immediate thought is The Boy Who Loved Everyone by Jane Porter and Maisie Paradise Shearring #KidsBooksFriday #KidLitUK

Yeah, she loves them but they did fall off a little for me...possibly coz we read them one after another with no break! We then also read the Ministry of Unladylike Activity books before moving on to more modern murders. Just starting The Swifts, great writing with humour as well as the mystery.

Bea & I just finished this as her bedtime story, she really enjoyed it #KidLitUK

#KidLitUK a great book!
Today is the day! Or a day, anyway.
The Call in its spanking new cover is available right... this... second... in bookshops across Ireland and the UK. Woohoo!
My publisher sent me flowers too 😀

I have the libby library app & listen to one of the Discworld audiobooks just about every time I'm home alone doing chores (only works if not fussy about reading them in order because they've all always got waiting lists). The newish readings of them are great!

Yeah, I'd locked my account but not used it for at least a year. Was following the advice to keep your handle so that no one misuses it...pondered deleting tweets, couldn't be bothered, just deactivated the whole account last month.

Same! And still begging publishers to set up corporate accounts on here 😬
February 12, 2026 at 8:13 AM
Or...is it how they define "friend"? Like, if it is just IRL people then yeah, you probably don't only want to see their posts, but if they're including bonds formed over the last 25years of internet then...
February 12, 2026 at 8:09 AM
Absolutely, and you will find new people because of what your friends share instead of what an algorithm shares! It is the whole "echo chamber" thing again...perhaps the statement isn't actually true & it is just that theyre still trying to make people believe that they want to see random stuff

My friends' rent on their house (smaller than ours with no parking and a tiny garden) is more than our mortgage, and they say they've got a good deal! It is outrageous.

It really should be "we're not asking the kids to dress up but they can if they want to"...

At least they sent the email in reasonable time - last year Bea's school sent an email saying they don't want anyone to wear costumes but to wear pjs instead, which would have been fine except they did it the friday before and we'd had Bea's costume planned for months.

Very pleased to see that my 2 nominations have been longlisted 🥳 A couple of disappointing omissions & a couple that I wouldn't have longlisted (in fact 1 that I absolutely *loathed*), but I've read 3/4 of them already & there are definitely some absolute gems on both #Carnegies2026 lists! #KidLitUK
They're here: the longlists for the #Carnegies2026. 19 books are on the longlist for the Carnegie Medal for Writing, including 5 past winners. Is your favourite here? Which of these books would you choose for the shortlist? @CarnegieMedals #booksky

This is such a shame, but understandable. Hopefully there's funding out there to make 2027 a brilliant year coz @littlerebsprize.bsky.social is one of my favourite awards! #KidLitUK
The organisers of the vital Little Rebels Award @littlerebelsprize.bsky.social have paused this year's prize as they look for funding for a part time award administrator. Can you help? They hope to regroup and come back with a bang in 2027. Find out more:

No, unless the bruising travels up the foot & the pain spreads. But hopefully it will settle quickly!
