I do a #BookAdvent for Bea, all wintery/Christmas books, some old favourites and some new. The mix of picturebooks & chapter books means we just about get through them before putting them away again in January, but each year the overall page count increases! Its lovely to unwrap a book a day, enjoy!

We have instilled a love of dvds in Bea, her stocking always includes at least one we've seen in the cinema or on the tv. When we no longer had access to Netflix she was v upset to not be able to get Hilda on dvd as they don't release their stuff! Once a netflix original is gone it really is gone 😔

Don't ask me why I always defend the Carnegies, it seems to be in my bones 😬 They're certainly not perfect, & I haven't loved all the recent changes *cough* Greenaway *cough*, but I'm interested in how they evolve & I do still think they're important!

Oh, that boils my blood. I was very pleased when Bea's teacher thanked me for keeing her off school when she had a temperature, made a nice change from attendance stats

Oh, absolutely. The writing medal is older than the illustration, which was introduced to recognise artists & so focussed only on them. The increase in noms for comics/ill. older fiction shows limitations of the criteria as they can't really be judged the same way as a "traditional" picturebook was!
November 4, 2025 at 12:17 PM
But when something is nominated for both there are the most wonderful discussions about the synergy of the art/text in the judging meetings (or at least there were when I was involved) and the difficultly of judging the text alone having read it under the influence of the illustration.
November 4, 2025 at 8:50 AM
The nominations aren't done by committee but by anyone who is a member of CILIP - don't have to be involved in children's librarianship - then the judges get their hands on them to long/shortlist. 1 nom each for each. As a judge, if one of your faves isn't nominated it is heartbreaking.

You were robbed! Love that book.
November 4, 2025 at 8:44 AM
Yep, and it has happened! And there are always a few titles nominated for both awards but (I'm pretty sure) there's only ever been 1 book that won them both - A Monster Calls.
November 3, 2025 at 6:06 PM
A book where the illustrations are beautiful but don't relate to the text would not win (but a wordless one could). It has to be that the text would be less without the pictures. But the essence of your moan is why authors are now listed as well as the illustrator (tho they still don't get a prize).
