Cat runs up behind her on the yellow brick road as she remains engrossed in her own thoughts. "And if there's no skill-based barrier to entry in this elite then their in-group social cohesion becomes paramount to maintaining their privilege." "The second greatest trick was to cast a boss class as inevitable," says Cat. "They HAVE to cover for each other," Girl says, "it's the only skill they have!" "So the question is why them," says Cat. "THANKSGIVING or BLACK FRIDAY" says Girl as she and Cat walk along. "Which is the REAL American holiday?" Asks a blue creature emerging from the bush. "Aah!," yells Cat. "It's HOARY CLICHE and its brother HAIRY CLICHE." The blue creature and now its orange, hairy double continue their dirge. "One celebrates fellowship - and one celebrates commerce. One celebrates broken promises - and one celebrates the hollow, fleeting joy of the consumer. One celebrates the destruction of civilizations in pursuit of the right to call an occupied land a blank slate - and one celebrates the forests, the waters, the human lives lost or cut short in our rapacious quest to PRODUCE MORE THINGS - You know we're right!" "That's the worst part" mutters Girl, her arms crossed. "One celebrates a massacre - an one celebrates a massacre!" DING goes Cat's phone. "Ooooh, sale!" "How much?" asks Hoary Cliche. "I need razors" says Hairy Cliche. "Ugh" says Girl. "You're very hard to buy presents for," says Cat. Girl has had enough and walks off, hands aloft - "I know what I like!" Cat and the cliches watch as she leaves. Cat looks back down at his phone. "Nothing!" Yells Girl in the distance. "What are you guys up to later" asks Cat.

"I love the ice cream factory!" Says Girl, walking out with a towering ice cream cone. "It's REAL - the ice cream - and the people who make the ice cream - and the people who enjoy the ice cream. And management is a thin layer of abstraction working with money and numbers to keep the ice cream factory making ice cream." "Did you hear about the whipped cream factory that merged with the sprinkles warehouse"" asks Cat. Girl frets. "And when a boss works their way up from the factory floor - they know ICE CREAM. But when the boss comes from upper management at a chain go privatized hospitals - they know MANAGEMENT!" "They had to work SUNDAES," says Cat. "And then the management and finance and the numbers that need to go up," continues Girl, "are the REAL important things." "Until the factory was shut down," grimaces Cat. "And the business is a fungible abstraction whose primary purpose is - not to make ice cream - but to move numbers," says Girl. "And the company reconstituted itself as a real estate trust" says Cat as his ice cream melts. "Anyway they all lost their pensions." Girl looks at her melted ice cream. "I thought this tasted like real estate."

I was thinking again about how basically the entire economy (in North America at least but probably elsewhere too) is being hollowed out by private equity- no longer making anything, simply moving numbers around.

Anyway it would be cool if the entertainment industry could make entertainment again

IT'S THE TIME OF THE MONSTERS Frankenstein and the vampire sit at a bar drinking. "Pffft," says the vampire. "You call THEM monsters? In my day you were CURSED to walk among the nightmares! You barely have to PAY these people!" Frankenstein puts an arm around his buddy. "Me buy candy." "Where is the imagination," the vampire says, "where is the pride in craft?" "Cost THIS MUCH" says Frankenstein, holding out his hands. "You used to pick a target and spend WEEKS bewitching them," the vampire says. "My say - AM ON PACKAGE" says Frankenstein, his eyes wide. "But I guess the ol' vampire bit just doesn't SCALE!" Yells the vampire. Frankenstein puts his head down. "No recognize." "Give me Booberry over one hundred ICE agents every day," the vampire continues, "he might not have scared too many kids, but that was a guy you could count on to pick you up after a colonoscopy!" Later they both sing tearfully, arm in arm, to the Monster Mash. The vampire sniffs and puts on his coat. Frankenstein checks his phone as they head out of the bar. "The world is a scary place" says the vampire, heading into the dark. "Should give Booberry a call," says Frankenstein.

Cat and Girl vs the Merfolk
Cat and Girl walk down a bust street. Splash! Girl wades into the water. "How long have we been wet?" Cat asks. "Always-", replies Girl, "you weren't paying attention." "I guess I just got used to it" says Cat. "Is it getting deeper? Should we worry"? They wade further in. "It's OK," says Girl, "class is fluid." "I should have brought galoshes," Cat says. "Personal responsibility can only go so far" replies Girl. "It's all we can do to keep our own heads above water." "What's below the water," Cat wonders. "I should have brought my scuba gear" Girl says. "Personal responsibility can only go so far" says Cat. BUB BUB BUB, he sticks his head in the water. "Eventually the layers of sediment," Girl says, "hardens into caste." "WOW you don't want to be in there" says Cat. The water arounds them hardens, and they are stick in place. They look at the wasteland around them. A hand with a coffee cup peeks out of the newly hardened ground. A hat sits on a mound. "Looks OK up here" Girl says. Cat looks over - "Ooooh free hat!"

On the old highway - past the collapsed bridge - by the abandoned mall - and the old Covid testing site - in the abandoned addition to the abandoned mall - inside the abandoned Pandora Jewelry - there is a box. Cat and Girl approach a chest. They open it - "It's just jewelry!" says Cat. Girl looks inside. "Everything else escaped." "Well where am I gonna find MISFORTUNE?" Cat asks. They leave. "We could try the Jamba Juice" Girl says. "For an OVERPRICE ground bones of the state's enemies smoothie?" Says Cat. "NO THANKS."

One year later, still haunted by the specter of the NYC middle school lottery, I find myself scrolling through admissions data trying to understand how kids are unofficially tracked, how some elementary schools unofficially feed into some middle schools that unofficially feed into some high schools.
