Seattleite, hiker, love all animals but currently live with just one cat, reading is my fave thing (history, mystery, historical mysteries, scifi, science, nonfiction generally), big fan of Deep Space and Deep Time. Liberal Democrat.
To my Senators and Member of Congress:

Are these Hegseth-ordered murders violations of U.S. criminal statute?

If so, please state as much in the House and Senate, to get it into the Congressional Record.

Thank you.

Our goal for 2026? More print subscribers than the Washington Post.

This is, somehow, feasible.

So sign up! A year of print is $75 for the year today. Help us do a very funny thing.

NEW: Epstein survivors release the most powerful PSA I have ever seen.

Make this go viral so every member of the House of Representatives sees it.

Well, damn.

Just found out my favorite mystery-thriller author, Thomas Perry, died a couple months ago. His last book - and, now, the last Jane Whitefield book ever - will be published next year.

I recommend him highly to anyone who likes intelligent, well-plotted mysteries.

RIP, Mr. Perry.

In the past few days, I've seen at least three Waymo vehicles tooling around Seattle's north end.

I think they're mapping rather than autonomous taxis, because they have what seem like a lot of sensors: a big AWACs-style dish on the roof, and an adorable revolving light thingie on the rear.

pictured: two folk almanacs from our library, which give plenty of examples of the kinds of folk celebrations that would happen throughout the English calendar year - whether that's Halloween or Bonfire Night, which takes place this evening!

Boy, North Carolina Republicans sure don't want the attached story to circulate. I sure hope that this stupid threat from their spokesperson doesn't boomerang on them and have a lot more people read and share the story, which once again, is conveniently attached below. That would be a shame.

"Quiet quitting" works for consumerism, too.

You want US corps to stop supporting fascism?

Stop supporting them. Stop buying their products, stop using their services. Buy used computers (and other stuff) on eBay, shop in person rather than online.

You can't do it all. But you can do some.

A multi-part comment on Chris Clark's "Revolutionary Spring," a detailed account of the wave of revolutions that shook Europe in 1848:

1. Insurrectionists rarely/never form stable coalitions

By their very nature, insurrectionists do not "play well with others."

Anyone know what time today this "Rapture" thing is supposed to happen?

I'm looking outside and don't see any flying humans.

I am shocked that the Autumn Solstice is on September 22nd this year.

When I was growing up, the Solstices - and Equinoxes - were always on the 20th or 21st.

It appears the planet is a day late, a diurnal short.

Just cancelled my subscription to Vanity Fair for hiring this fraud.
What that drives me insane about Olivia Nuzzi is we don't know what ethical crimes she committed in her reporting BEFORE the RFK Jr. sexting scandal

You don't go from "totally ethical reporter" to "sexting with a Presidential candidate" over the course of one story

She was emboldened by that point

The thing about GOP voters is they didn't elect their Reps and Senators to be anything other than what they are.

These are not "statesmen" by any stretch of the definition. They neither know nor care about national interest, common good, etc.

They represent, and reflect, their voters.

Football talk!

Are you as shocked as I am* that Miami QB Tagovailoa, after suffering multiple concussions over multiple seasons, is no longer considered an elite QB?

*I.e., not at all.

He should never have been allowed back on the field.

"He wanted to"?

FFS, the man has TBI. Probably CTE.
