I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

it will never not be wild to me that there are actual human people walking around our neighborhood streets dressed just like this I think we need to continue to remind our brains that this is extremely not normal
Earlier this morning around 10:15, ICE agents were spotted near Howard and Greenview in Rogers Park. It doesn't appear they arrested anyone, and they quickly left the area.

Speak up to prevent a major loss for the field. CASP, which helped shaping structural biology including AlphaFold is on the verge of shutting down. NIH funding has lapsed, UC Davis support ends and the core team is being let go. Painfully shortsighted.

I wrote my first thread about the ongoing Republican assault on the our constitutional republic just four months ago.

At the time I worried that I was going overboard ... becoming shrill and paranoid.

In retrospect, I underestimated the severity of the situation.

I’m going to hold forth for a little bit on what Trump and Musk are doing to the federal government right now.

If that’s not your thing, well, just look away for a sec. I’ll be back to hyper-local, artisanal civics soon enough.

Courage. Now more than ever. These NIH staffers just stood up to Trump, RFK Jr., Bhattacharya. We need to have their backs. The administration will come for each of them, one and all now. apnews.com/article/nih-...
NIH scientists go public to criticize Trump's deep cuts in public health research
Scores of National Institutes of Health researchers and staffers have come forward to send their Trump-appointed leader a letter challenging policies they say undermine the NIH mission.

The war on science in the US is already having an effect on private sector research like AlphaFold. Bears repeating but the private sector builds on top of things created by academic research for the public good. This hurts everyone.

Sure, they doomed millions to painful, needless deaths, built camps, did away with due process, stole from the treasury, destroyed our reputation abroad, took bribes, put bigotry back into law, and thumbed their nose at the judges and lawyers who tried to rein them in - but what does the market say?

Science does not work like this. The only way you can set a timeline is if you have rigged the results in advance.

Agreed.

And we failed that test.
And failed ourselves.
And our nation.

There hasn’t only been one tipping point in recent years—but January 6 and the non-reaction to it was a big one.

We watched an attempted coup.

And elected its leader president.
Not a huge believer in tipping points, but there was about a one-month period when everyone seemed truly appalled and we could have collectively agreed to ensure something like this would not happen again.
To the very end, I will never understand how January 6th, 2021, wasn’t a dealbreaker.

As we gawk at the $250M Musk spent elect Trump, take a guess how long it took him to “earn” it back in the market?

It took just 15 minutes. I'm not kidding... 15 minutes. According to Bloomberg, his net worth soared by $8B just today.

That’s billionaire math for you—and it’s all of our problem.

uv was great for this. Didn't have to think about creating virtual environments or where I wanted to install textual, just a one-liner like

uv --from textual python -m textual.demo.game

and I was off to the races
Would you like to try out this game in your terminal?

Of course you would!

I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.
