if my position is “we need sensible immigration policy and a path to citizenship for the undocumented,” and your position is “we need to yank unsuspecting abuelitas out of their cars at Ralphs and deport them to, I dunno, Tajikistan,” then no, I won’t be “meeting you in the middle”

if you were a Georgia student in the late 1990s then you have a pretty good idea of how the Democrats handle victory. sweeping the off-year elections and immediately capitulating on the government shutdown = blowing out the Gators and then immediately shitting the bed at home against Auburn

unfortunately this is more or less the democrats’ definition of “trying”

Is that the promised vote? Does that count as fulfilling Thune's pledge?
UPDATE: The Senate votes 53-47 to shoot down the Baldwin amendment to extend ACA funds for 1 year. A party-line vote with every Republican rejecting it.
An important vote in this series: Tammy Baldwin’s proposal to extend ACA expiring funds for 1 year. It’s structured as a motion to table (i.e. scrap it from the amendment tree). But it’ll show the appetite (or lack thereof) in the Senate to address this issue.

you just opened the door for republicans to jack those healthcare costs through the roof. you had the opportunity to “stand for them” and literally did the exact opposite thing
Kaine on why he thinks just getting a vote on healthcare is a win: "We're the minority party, but everybody will get to see who is standing for them when it comes to lowering their healthcare costs"

good news, fellow frogs: the scorpion just told me he’s not going to sting us
Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

imagine the “go get your shinebox” scene from GoodFellas, but instead of beating the shit out of Billy Batts, Tommy DeVito cries “why are you being so mean?!” and pees his pants.

that’s the dems rn. the whip is supposed to be the enforcer keeping everyone in line, but durbin is a complete wuss.
I know a lot of folks want to point out Schumer sucking (me too) but can I add that when your Whip is deserting and caving, YOU HAVE THE WRONG PERSON HOLDING THE WHIP. That title isn’t just “second oldest.” The job is holding people together. Durbin is maybe worse than Schumer.

what drives me fucking nuts is schumer saying it’s a bad deal and acting made that eight dems voted for it. you’re the fucking minority leader, numbnuts! holding your senators together and keeping them from voting for terrible deals is kinda your job!

HASSAN: if we give you everything you want, will you come to the table?

REPUBLICANS: i mean…yeah, obviously

HASSAN: aahaha ha haa. checkmate
Hassan: With the government reopening shortly, Republicans now finally have to come to the table. Or make no mistake, Americans will remember who stood in the way.

Good thing Senate Democrats showed that there are no consequences to anything ever by giving up all their leverage 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
BREAKING:

Trump has just issued pardons to dozens of conservatives who tried to overturn the 2020 election results, including: Mark Meadows, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeffrey Clark, Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, Boris Epshteyn, and more — per pardon attorney Ed Martin.

DEMS: we ended the shutdown!

VOTERS: so you saved the ACA subsidies?

DEMS: well, no…but we got these magic beans!

VOTERS: so they grow a huge beanstalk that you climb and there’s a giant at the top and you slay him and bring back a goose that lays golden eggs?

DEMS: ok so maybe not *magic* magic

It is, and what goes unsaid is that the piece in question a) opened with one of the most blatantly racist ledes I’ve read in years* and b) was by Jeremy Peters, who for the last decade has functioned as effectively a Heritage Foundation-type operative inside the Times newsroom

all due respect to the late, great alan arkin, but gary cole was robbed of a best supporting actor oscar that year, and i’m not even a little bit joking
I am on record that Talladega Nights is one of the best parodies of NASCAR while being a documentary at the same time, but of all roles, Gary Cole as Ricky's dirtbag deadbeat dad may have been the best supporting role in the movie.

I, for one, am totally fine with my coach being known as Noted Asshole Kirby Smart
Georgia sent the punt team out on fourth-and-3 ... then switched in the offense. Mississippi State called timeout.

After the TO, Georgia sent the punt team out again ... then switched in the offense again. Mississippi State jumped offsides.

A few plays later, Georgia touchdown.

playing mississippi state is like going on a five-mile run. i know i need to do it but i’m not looking forward to it. it’ll be embarrassing when people see how much i’m struggling. and while there’s a *chance* i’ll feel energized and accomplished at the end, i’ll probably just be glad it’s over

Reminder that Republicans don't really believe in religious liberty. Religion is a tool for enhancing their political power, and any expression of faith to the contrary must be suppressed.
