This is my old office, and they just took an embarrassing loss when a jury acquitted a man of allegedly assaulting a federal ICE agent.

I’m guessing there are going to be other defendants now choosing to go to trial rather than plead.

Disney/ABC did not wait for the FCC hammer to fall — they chose, instead, to obey in advance.

But, even then, the corporate lackeys lacked the courage of their capitulation — failing to offer any explanation or defense of their surrender.

Displaying its muscle-memory for cowardice, ABC caved to state threats of investigations, retaliation, and regulatory f*ckitude. It was yet another episode of corporate capitulation, in the vain hope that sacrificing free speech will make MAGA eat them last

This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.

Texas AG Ken Paxton and Trump’s DOJ have moved to a “new level” of using the courts to change policy, said one legal expert.

Paxton is working to “challenge Texas’ own laws. There are no statutes that allow, or even anticipate, this behavior.”
The Texas Redistricting Fight Has Been the Testing Ground for the Trump Administration’s Latest Legal Strategy

The last political column I was allowed to write in the @washingtonpost.com was a criticism of Obama.

His people took issue with my piece, but we were respectful.

Now he is tweeting in support of me.

This is how free political speech and respect for debate *actually works*.

Or used to work.

The whole idea pushed by conservatives that liberals are censorious and right-wingers are liberty-loving free-speech champions has always been bunk. Go back to McCarthyism. We're now seeing their true colors, with this cancel crusade that's using state power to suppress speech they don't favor.

Let’s be clear: This is government censorship. The government is telling, through pressure, private corporations what they can and cannot say and air.

It is incredibly dangerous and is the beginning of the end of free speech in America.

Obama: We have to recognize that on both sides there are people who are extremists

But I will say that those extreme views were not in my White House. I wasn’t embracing them. I wasn’t empowering them. I wasn’t putting the weight of the government behind extremist views.
