So proud my postdoctoral work is finally out!

We designed an assay to measure cfDNA and DNA mutations in samples collected simultaneously to lower limits of detection in liquid biopsy assays, using clonal hematopoiesis as an example.

What’s the frequency?

In this research letter, @caitlinstewart.bsky.social & team use clonal hematopoiesis as a model for simultaneous assessment of somatic mutations across multiple biosamples.

Finally! I remember reading this at the time and not believing it.

But the authors are right in saying that to "retract because of a dispute about data interpretation, you’d have to retract half the literature”.

Interested to see what happens next.

Controversial ‘arsenic life’ paper retracted after 15 years — but authors fight back
The journal Science retracts a headline-grabbing study, but the authors vigorously defend their data and say the retraction is unwarranted.

Finally deleted twitter for good. It was just garbage on my feed at this point.

Going to be on Bluesky much more now - anyone have good recommendations of who to follow?

Looking for anything: art, science, journalism, photography, writers, whatever.

I’ll be at the Festival of Genomics and Biodata in Boston next week. Send me a message if you’ll be there and want to meet up!

For my Boston people not attending FOG, I’ll be around the 23-26 of June and would love to see you outside of the conference!

Happy and proud to see this out!

Congratulations to lead author @benjcrousseau.bsky.social and the rest of the Diaz team! I played a small role in this, the amount of work they did to put this together was huge.

I’ve had whooping cough despite being vaccinated (the vaccine doesn’t work in everyone and people like me rely on herd immunity), it was awful.

Antivaxxers stopped vaccinating kids in my area and I got it.

We’ll relive the devastation soon enough and hopefully come round to vaccinate again.
The only reason anti-vax attitudes were able to take root in the modern era is because vaccines are so fucking good at their job people forgot why we need them

“I do not blame academia for my addiction. I am, however, arguing for a space where we can talk more freely about the addictions that plague us, a space that makes room for people in recovery instead of expecting them to go it alone.”

Thoughts in 🧵
for the Huffington Post, I wrote about alcoholism, addiction, & academia:

“I have hope for the first time in a long time that I can emerge out of the darkness of addiction into the light. I cannot do this if I am not radically honest about where I’ve been.”

I'm An Alcoholic — And My Profession Makes It Hard To Stay Sober
"Those of us who struggle with alcoholism and addiction have internalized the pervasive message that we are simply screw-ups."

Something rarely discussed is addiction and stress regarding staying sober in academia. We hear a lot about mental health challenges but this particular one is something that needs to be more widely discussed!

Excited to read the article on Thursday. Congrats Alicia!
I’m getting nervous about my article coming out—the social headline will read:

“I'm An Alcoholic — And My Profession Makes It Hard To Stay Sober”

but my whole goal is to dispel the shame & stigma & help people in recovery. so I’m going to be brave, like always, & hope for grace.
