Hi new followers 👋, welcome, this account is a weird mix of tangents on #hacking #history and current events involving large, or particularly interesting, hacks, how the media looks at hacking and just what is going on with hacktivism.

Ok, you can stop texting me, I saw the Ring ad. Troubling things about it 🧵:

-The long awaited (much warned about) intro of “AI” recognition. It starts w/ searching for a “brown dog” but means the tech is there for lisence plate reading, face recognition, searching for suspects by description, etc

Is there any proof anywhere that creepy home surveillance systems like Ring actually reduce crimes like theft of packages? To my recollection surveillance generally doesn’t impact crime in the way that people expect or think it does. Trade off is helping create a surveillance state in return for ???

The Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq or “313 Team” claim to have attacked Internet Archive, Microsoft’s Office portal and other high profile sites. Latest target is Grok. I’d say someone wants to be the new Anonymous Sudan and is really chasing internet tough guy clout.

A lot of people only became aware of the concept of a nation based hacktivist cyberwar because of Russia and Ukraine, but hackers from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India have been at it pretty much non-stop since the late nineties.

Reminder: your 'privacy' VPN is still a physical server in somebodies jurisdiction.

Claim of RAM disk servers as protection is...interesting.

I know nothing more about this case, but hotplugs that let authorities grab a server without cutting power are common. 1/

I'd like to add that like in all industries, when we stop understanding how our tools work, we become entirely dependent on the corporate entities that own the mold. We are trading the ability to build and repair for the convenience of being permanent tenants in someone else's infrastructure/subs.
Vibe coding is working as expected: it'll kill the open-source, secure, and ideologically maintained alternatives to make sure you have to pay the oligarchs to do anything at all, and they can control what you're allowed to make.
