Back to working on this blog about 1980s anti-hacker hacktivist John Maxfield.
For his part Maxfield is generally a little cagier about hanging out with these teenage hackers in person, though in the book Profits of Deceit he does describe the following events. Maxfield even got to know them personally, inviting hackers to his office at the height of the post-War Games frenzy. Kids travelled over 600 miles, from as far away as Washington, DC, to come and meet the veteran hacker and phone phreak, and to play with his equipment. Most of the Inner Circle turned up: the Stainless Steel Rat, PBX Super Switch, Myth, System Lord, Mr Binary, the Rodent and, of course, their leader, the Wizard of Arpanet. Maxfield told them that he worked as a telephone-equipment repair-man. Profits of Deceit, Patricia Franklin, 1990 I must point out here that I am not implying any additional impropriety here, I think the facts as presented above are alarming enough in themselves. A man in his mid forties luring teenage boys from across the U.S. to come and spend the weekend at his house so that he can compile incriminating dossiers on them, for the FBI.

This opinion piece is incredibly defensive from start to finish for a reason, the arguments really do amount to changing the definition of words like “conscious” and “intelligent”.

If the goalposts are moved any further they will need to be placed on orbiting satellites.
You might object that this is a verbal trick, that I'm arguing that A.I. will become conscious because we'll start using the word "conscious" to include it. But there is no trick. There is always a feedback loop between our theories and the world, so that our concepts are shaped by what we discover.

Gen-X were always the most disagreeable people online in my experience, Boomers at least had being old and ignorant and completely out of touch as an excuse.
Besides, in our own heads, if nowhere else, gen X were always the mild-mannered peacekeepers of the culture wars: not old enough to be deemed reactionary or young enough to be woke, and instead occupying a kind of cheerfully moderate Goldilocks zone in-between.

Crowdstrike claims Scattered Spider planned to have accomplices physically travel to target company offices to connect to WiFi and enable access to target networks.

New York Times coverage of the UPenn breach.
The University of Pennsylvania has reported a massive data breach to the Federal Bureau of Investigation involving 1.2 million lines of data including information on Penn donors, alumni and students, as well as internal university memos and banking information. Some of the information is believed to date back decades. The hacker, who appeared to be partly political motivated, also sent vulgar mass emails to Penn students and alumni last week accusing the Ivy League school of being "woke" and loving "legacies, donors and unqualified affirmative action admits." The breach followed similar hacks within the past year at New York University and Columbia. The Columbia breach resulted in the disclosure that Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate in the New York City mayoral race, identified himself as both Asian and Black or African American when he applied to the school in 2009.

Russian hacktivist group TwoNet now amplifying Telegram messages that pit Kurdish interests against Ukraine, these alliances are so tangled and contradictory but if this becomes a larger part of the overall alliance perhaps Russian hackers will be attacking Turkey and Iran soon?

I have wondered for some time how much data is floating about from ransomware gang leaks that never gets properly analysed in cases like this. This was a similar issue with big hacktivist leaks, so much potentially important data that doesn’t ever get in front of the right eyes.
Last year, the ransomware gang BlackSuit published the police files after the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department reportedly refused to pay a ransom. The breach was part of a growing trend of law enforcement and other government agencies being targeted by ransomware groups.

Also I see threat intel companies and journalists saying the hack isn’t confirmed and could be BS, the nazi hacker has posted proof in the form of screenshots of admin portals from UPenn and samples of stolen data.
