I personally plan to feel bad about a lot of things today, but not that I hoped and believed in a different outcome.

📢 Chicago, your monthly siren test is today at 10AM! Remember, it's just a test, not a cause for alarm. Stay safe, folks!

Good morning! I like to vote on the day (and I'm lucky to live in a place where that isn't difficult), so I got up early and did just that!

Enjoy a lovely afternoon by a pond under a blue sky with puffy white clouds. A Western Grebe is peeping, a hidden Sora is laughing, and American Coots are honking

A fine little threadlet!
A Halloween story from Bernd Heinrich's book Mind of the Raven:

According to Heinrich, there are many accounts of hikers hearing loud raven calls, turning around, and seeing a bear.

The hikers often feel grateful to the raven for warning them of the bear's presence.

Brandon's Tarotober drawings have been so good.
Happy Halloween, it's my last Tarotober and I drew a Reverse Page of Pentacles. The Reverse page can represent decay so I went with the imagery of a writhing mass of inky blackness and teeth to close out the month. I really enjoyed these Tarot card drawings and I hope you did as well

@pdynowski.bsky.social described this exact series (ROX-WSOX) as "pervert baseball for baseball perverts".
So here’s the problem - baseball goes out on a high with the World Series and it makes you miss it. They should follow that up with a three game series between the White Sox and the Rockies so we can say we’ve had our fill

This is also a big part of what makes Taskmaster sing. Editors! Let them help you!
I feel like it’s worth acknowledging that a huge part of what makes Billy on the Street funny is that whoever edits it has an exquisite sense of timing.

A Triscuit, a slice of extra-sharp Tillamook, a couple-three dots of El Yucateco habanera verde: perfect nibbles.

It's the Chariot for today's Tarotober. I imagined him as a big, floating brick man and I really feel like I delivered. The Chariot represents overcoming obstacles so I feel like my brain said "make him obstacle shaped"

They're bringing the Meximelt back for a limited time - cc: @hooverstreetrag.org - and I can have about seven glorious weeks of my perfect Taco Bell order. (Mexican pizza and a Meximelt) As @vixgreen.bsky.social says: Taco Bell! It's cheaper than food!

I'm out and about on my own today, since Paul's sleep schedule is upside-down right now. Went and got my eyebrows waxed, now heading for brunch, then a double feature of The Wild Robot and We Live in Time, unless I decide to just go home and do a puzzle and watch The Righteous Gemstones instead.

We watched this as part of #JulyCheatAndSteal this year and really liked it, and this covers a lot of why.
New today!

“Say ‘The Palm Beach Story.’ Your lips are making shapes like ‘A screwball comedy directed by Preston Sturges’ but all I can hear is, ‘This is how the anarchy of love moves in the world, confused & discombobulating, and—somehow—stabilizing in its arrhythmia.’

The Palm Beach Story (1942): The Invention of Love
The Palm Beach Story is an exemplary screwball in how it moves what it is all around the film’s frame. And it’s an exceptional screwball—maybe even an aberration of one—in the conclusions it draws and...
